I was running my lionel challenger today # 6-82696 ,engine #3989 when it tripped the breaker when the tender went over one of my fast track 036 switches ,i reset the breaker & went over the switch again this time it went through ok ,did it again & the breaker tripped again ,sometimes it would go through ok & other times it would trip,i then moved the engine & tender to another independent loop & it was ok ,took it off & put on 3rd independent loop & the breaker would trip some times & other times it would be ok.what i did notice was sometimes i would see sparks under the tender & sometimes no sparks ,this happened on 2 of the loops, i also noticed that when the breaker tripped the tender was almost through the switch ,i checked the switch with a magnet for any possible metal that may have been on the track ,none was found ,cleaned the switch still no change ,checked under the tender & found nothing unusual ,no metal stuck anywhere ,the engine itself without the tender goes through without any problems ,haven't opened the tender yet ,any idea what could be causing this?

Gerald; The first thing I would check is to see if the center rail power pickup rollers are "square" as far as mounting goes, i.e. is one skewed to one side or the other? This is always an issue with turnouts as the roller may contact both the hot and ground rails at the same time causing short circuit.
In addition to what D&H pointed out, you should also look to see if the solder connection to the roller is able to touch the tender frame. Turn the tender over and move the pickup rollers around to their max movement in all directions and be sure nothing can touch the frame. I have run across issues where the solder joint can touch the frame under certain conditions. Even if it is heat shrinked, be sure nothing has worn through.
Good luck,
Tony
Here is where the problem is ,is there anything i can do to fix the problem ?

Gerald: I suspect the issue is with the tender and not the turnout, otherwise, most of your rolling stock would be sparking there....

It's very common for one or two locomotives to have an issue at a specific switch and yet the vast majority of them will go through without a hitch.
Gerald, have you closely examined the switch and the rollers on the tender for arc marks. One technique is to clean all existing arc marks off and then run through until you get a trip. Examine the switch, rollers, and wheels carefully to see what is causing the short. You should see evidence of an arc if it's sufficient to trip the PH180 breaker.
Gerald, here's an older thread describing the same problem and a possible solution:
If the wheels have too much slop, sometimes you can insert shims to minimize the side to side movement without affecting normal operation.
John ,i did notice that there was what i thought was to much play in the wheels ,i wasn't sure what to do about that,& i did not check the rollers for arc marks ,any way i took RICKO'S advice & i went to the link he suggested & i put a piece of tape on the switch & ran the engine back & forth several times ,then i attempted to run around the whole loop but when the tender got to the other switch on the same siding it tripped the breaker ,so i put tape on that switch also & ran the tender back & forth several times ,now everything seems to running normal again i went around the loop 7 or 8 times no tripped breaker ,so the tape seems to have solved the problem,i never would have thought to do that ,thanks to RICO'S help for that link & thank you John & D&H65 for your help.
