I have not been very active on the forum or in the hobby for a few years.  I started a new layout about 3 years ago, and it went up very quickly.  I got burnt out from the layout and it is pretty difficult to work on.

My photography business also really taken off in this time.  I now need an office for it.  The train layout room will become my new office.

I plan to build a new layout in the office but with a much smaller footprint.  This will most likely utilize o27 track and curves, and run small postwar/modern Lioncheif trains.

The goal is to make it more kid friendly.  Easy to build.  Something I can realistically "finish" in less then 6 to 8 months.

So stay tuned.  I will start packing up the old stuff soon.  Selling some of it, and work on a track plan over the next month or two.  I have a week off in June that I will be tearing out the old layout 100%, patching the walls and repainting.

I am excited for the next adventure in Model Railroading.  In the meantime over the next few days I will run trains on the current layout and get pictures.

Jim, good to see you post again. A lot of things change with our hobby. It is so easy to get burned out and sometimes we find out we have to do a balancing act between family, work and hobby. Glad you have hit on something train related that will work for you. As everyone else  has said this has been one heck of a long running topic which you started. So thanks for starting it and good luck on your new layout. .....Paul

Been thinking on same lines, my aviation collection is getting bigger and the idea of a more switching layout.  Instead of room size, a small 5X12 layout. Working on some track plans for several days now. Be interesting to see what your downsized layout will encompass also.

The new layout will consist of just a few loops, very kid friendly.  I might have a separate smaller switching layout at some point in time for my scale equipment.

I find that I'm drawn to any train running around. It could be on a massive layout, or even just a shelf. If you like trains, you like trains.

So do what you can with what you can get your hands on.

I remember my old keyboard player saying he ran N scale while he was in the service. He could slide the train board under his bed in his apartment when not running. He ran what he could fit.

I never liked tiny trains before but it got me to look closer at them. They're still (toy) trains and they look good.

Hey Jim,

I really don't know nor have I seen pics of your current layout. As everyone has stated you have, what has to be, the largest thread on here and I see it going on forever because of its relatively to this forum.

I certainly understand your decision and also respect that you have not completely given up on this great hobby. I must say, reading your initial statement and seeing this topic gave me the feeling I had when my best friend decided to leave the hobby. That was one of the reasons we became friends in the first place and it was a big part of our friendship. Fortunately when he stopped trains we had built something bigger and still remain friends to this day. He even comes around some time and helps me on the layout.

I know, I just went on a tangent. Best wishes with your future endeavors and I hope that you continue the hobby in whatever way you can.

Dave

I’m in the same boat. Last layout took the fire out of me, once finished it sat. Other things forced time away, and I’ve not returned as often as I used too. Disposing of my parents belongings, especially my dads coin collection made me realize how hard it is for someone with no knowledge of your hobby to properly dispose of your collection.

i decided this year that I’d down size and simplify, not just for me, but family.

next layout will be fun, but easy to let go.
