That's because the shell & frame were already designed with that in mind.

Have you actually heard MTH's & QSI's cab forward sounds?  The in and out sync sounds pretty convincing to me.

The Alaska SD70MAC, of course. My RR has been in the 80's and 90's with the Legacy GP38-2's. I couldn't bring myself to buy one of the K-Line/Lionel TMCC Alaska SD-70MAC's from 2001. I wondered why they wouldn't put Legacy guts in it. Well, they finally have done it. The ARR still runs these beauties. The ARR ordered 16 of them, which were built at the EMD plant in PA.

For me,

I have the Milwaukee Road PS-4 flats with trailers 2 pk, and the single add on car which Lionel cataloged several years ago.  I was pleased to see another piggyback car, and I like the truck set too.

I also will order the 86' Milwaukee Highcube cars in 2 pk along with the single add in car.

milw 86 autoparts

I like this car so I'll order the wood side boxcar.

Last year in Lionel's 2013 book I purchased the Chicago Northwestern F7 Classic Cab diesels.  I received them last summer.  Since they are being carried over for another year I will pick up a powered B unit.

What really catches my eye is the lineup of E8'S and the E9's.  I know there will be much discussion about porthole locations, pilot detail, color matches, and head light location ect.

I have already ordered the Milwaukee Road set from the 2013 Lionel book.  So hopefully these arrive soon.

 Milw e-9

I don't collect this series. However, from the ready to run book this one car...

Reagan

Very impressive book, Nice to see the command cranes back.  I have a blue Lionel Lines command crane and work caboose offered through Lionel Railroader Club.

Not sure, I'll look again but didn't see the aluminum acf hoppers this time.

I'm on the fence for a Zephyr or NKP 765. It depends on my budget , but mostly because I stay with MR and CNW roadnames.

Was hoping for classic cab diesels in Soo Line, or a Soo Line Steam engine since I live in Wisconsin. Preferably the Soo 2719.  Maybe next year, but I can go over to that "other" thread to whine about it.

I enjoyed reading everyone's responses

"Or just pull the TMCC boards out & replace it with ProtoSounds 2.0 and load the cab forward sound file into it; much, much easier than having to jury-rig a whole new drivetrain to support two motors."

Well, consider that not everyone wishes to have a battery in their locomotive . And  many consider PS2 sounds to be less than state of the art in terms of being acoustically fine scale.

I could have sworn this was a discussion of Lionel products, not how much more some of us like MTH products . But as usual, I'm wrong.

I knew I could count on you Dr. Neil to come rushing gallantly to Lionel's defense and take a subtle jab at MTH in the process.

As Pete (Norton) said previously, it's a bit of thread drift.  And if you cared to delve into this particular correspondence more carefully, one of the original comments on the thread was the concern if Lionel was going to correct the sounds for their recently announced Cab Forward remakes.  Sound fidelity being subjective aside, high-quality sounds doesn't alter the fact that Lionel's earlier cab forward's whistle, chuffing rate, and compressor sounds were not done correctly.

Thus, this "thread drift" addresses how to resolve that problem.  As much as the very suggestion may be to the chagrin of your sensibilities, and until the day comes when Lionel/ERR offers an aftermarket sound board with the correct sounds, the only current, available solution is earlier generation QSI, QSI Protosound 1, or ProtoSound 2 or 3 cab-forward sounds.  Don't fault me for bringing MTH into the equation; if Lionel did it right for the prior release then we wouldn't even be having this discussion.

I think you will not find me,  or anyone else,  on threads about the new MTH catalog taking jabs at MTH, subtle or not.  On the other hand, we can always count on you to appear on Lionel catalog threads taking not so subtle jabs at Lionel. .  You're about as transparent as they come in this regard.

Dr. Neil, honestly, on the flip side have you really convinced yourself that your own postings never come with the intention to be confrontational or argumentative?  Your reply comes across as sour grapes due to my straightening out what amounts to a blatant misconception on your part.

I critique discrepancies regardless of brand.  I've put MTH's feet under the fire in the past, Atlas O, K-Line, & Weaver as well.  I'm an equal opportunity critic & rivet counter.

I think you are talking about the K-Line collector club engines that were delivered by Lionel in 2006 after the closing of K-Line.  These engines were ordered directly from K-Line either conventionally or with TMCC. They were also pre-paid in advance.  Lionel promised to deliver these engines to K-Line club members (as part or their arrangement to handle the liquidation of much or K-Line's other merchandise).  As Lionel was spending their own money to deliver engines that payment was already made to someone else, it makes sense that they were delivered with TMCC and not the brand-spanking new Legacy.

Glad to here that Lionel will be making the engine you want WITH Legacy.

Jim

So far I have ordered an NS Tie-Jector, and an SP crane, which meant that I also had to order an SP boom car to go with it. These meant that I just had to order an SP FM Trainmaster to pull them. Then I realised that I wouldn't be running the crane all of the time, so I also ordered both sets of the PFE cars.

I'm still debating whether or not I can rebuild my layout with O72 curves, as I really really really  want to get a Cab-forward to haul the PFE cars when the Trainmaster is busy with the crane.

Then there are several other items that I will be ordering later in the year....

Is this known as creeping catalogitus? Or am I simply a Trainoholic?

Probably the most sage advise you've ever given yourself.

In my relatively short time here, it has become pretty clear that John is an equal opportunity critic, not a "fan boy."  That makes some people uncomfortable.  For me, I know I am getting an unvarnished view.

Lionel is now playing to the high-end scale crowd.  While it holds very little interest to me -- different strokes for different folks -- at this price point and with that audience they should be prepared to get the small stuff right.  As well as the quality.  My perspective here is not to needle anyone or any firm, but as a fan of Lionel who is rooting for them to get it right.  As a general matter, I find that people are more inclined to perform better when they are given honest information.  Respectful, but honest.

As for me and what I am ordering / buying:  the Lionel Lines piggybacks, maybe two, a Lionel Lines caboose, a full Lionel Lines tractor trailer, tie-jector car, and the SD 70 in Conrail livery (need at least one or two reasonably modern locos).  I was going to order a big boy, and need to make up my mind this week or next, but we do not have O72 track and will not have that radius for some time so to make a wonderful operating locomotive like that into a shelf queen seems wrong.  Moreover, the kids go to the B&O museum and see the Allegheny they have there -- and those should be available in RK versions this year and they will run on what we have.

But a great catalog overall.  I would like to see these Lionchief steamers up close as well to see how they are made.  I am not worried about the remote system so much as the heft and durability of the build.  If they are nice, we may add a couple of those as well.  We'll see.

I need Lionel to provide more information about the Big Boy before I order it. I need to know about the after cooler piping.  The last time I was in this position was four years ago when they were coming out with the new PRR K4. Fortunately I was able to ask them at York whether it would use the K-Line tooling.  They confirmed then that it would and I preordered and am very happy with the model.  I can't make it to York this time and I hope someone can ask them for me about the after coolers.

No doubt something or the other. But I've reached a stage in the hobby and life where I have so much stuff, a new product has to have some special attraction for me (like the LCCA Texas Special offerings).  With several hundred pages of catalog to go through, I'm going to wait for the paper copies.  But this number and diversity of product is pretty much unprecedented, and, given the state of the hobby and economy, a bit amazing.  As much as I love my 1957 Lionel catalog, these catalogs have to be a bit of a high water mark for Lionel.  The only thing missing is the accessory catalog, which I gather will be coming in the next year or so.  No Lionel want list is complete for me without some new operating accessory.

John, why don't you write to Mike Reagan directly if this is of great importance to you? Although from everything that I have seen and read so far, I believe that it will be produced with the cooler coils as illustrated in the catalogue.

I am grateful that there are no engines that are must buys for me. The one exception is the GN Heavy Mikado...but I have several MTH engines on order to include the Milwaukee Road Little Joe, GN S2 set and NP NCL F7 set.

There are a few pieces of rolling stock that I am planning on ordering. Those will be:

Santa Fe 86' Auto Box

Milwaukee Road 86' Auto Box (all 3)

Milwaukee Road Double sheethed box

Frisco Double sheethed box

CB & Q Hopper set

BN Tank.

That's it!!

I pre-ordered two of the LionChief Plus steamers.   I will likely  order two more later in the year, perhaps one as a present for my younger brother who is a great modeler in N, and has an On30 layout on display in Denver.

He finds the traditional F-N-R-N sequence to be off-putting and irritating (I wonder how many others do as well) so the LC+ should have a much better impression.   With all the features including sound, smoke, remote couplers, speed control, I hope he will enjoy and appreciate having a carpet central Lionel Fastrack layout.
