There is always a lot of speculation about the next Visionline release from Lionel. I made my prediction last summer and decided to make a quick video to explain my thinking. I've heard from a lot of viewers about what they would like to see, from a Q1 or Q2 to a special Polar Express Berk to a Disney Locomotive. What are your thoughts on Friday's announcement?

I watched last night Chris. There was a topic started a few days ago with speculation and the Triplex was on that list. I couldn't remember that the Virginian had one, but when MTH made theirs, they did not make the trailing truck right. Hopefully if Lionel does indeed have this, and does make it, they will do that correctly. The Triplex is one of those odd looking engines that just doesn't fit my liking, but hey, everyone has something they like and don't like. Hopefully we will see this and everyone that wants one will be happy.
The next visionline engine will be the steamer from the book "The little engine that could" Hey, you never know.
I think it's going to be a BIG one.

As I posted on another platform, I believe Chris, and the Triplex stands a very good chance at being the next Vision loco. At the same time, I hope it isn’t.
I am really wanting new tooling for a Vision loco. Maybe I expect too much, but in 2022 we got the N&W Class A (new tooling). In 2020 we got the new tooling for the GS. In between we had other steam. We haven’t had a non-steam engine since 2016 from what I can see.
Don’t get me wrong, I like seeing steam, and I realize that steam allows for more ‘bells and whistles’ to be added (no pun intended). Though, if it is the Triplex, it would probably draw upon the MTH tooling that many think Lionel now owns. Of course Lionel would say that it is new tooling, but is it really? They would need to make some very heavy modifications to it to justify the Vision name.
Many people would be excited to see the Triplex with Legacy. I understand that, but there must be some non-steam engines that can be produced on par with the ES44, Genset, and GG-1.
Thanks for allowing me to vent about the lack of diesel Vision engines.
I'm still hoping for a modern diesel for my new, modern-themed layout. I really want a Siemens Charger, ET44 Tier 4 GEVO, or SD70ACe-T4. A Metrolink EMD F125 "Spirit" would be cool, too. Hopefully, we'll get some cool rolling stock to go with the new Vision loco.

I could agree with all of these - especially the Charger or ET44.
An interesting historical note is that back in 2009 I attended my first York and closely examined a MTH 'Gauge One' Triplex that had whistle steam. The large models are also in the Railing Line. This was several years before Lionel introduced that feature on any of their steamers. Too bad Mike didn't carry that over to their Premiere line sooner.
c.sam, I remember the Gauge 1 Triplex on display. My wife was blown away by it. Not sure if it was the Prussian blue color or what. I mentioned they made them in o gauge. Well the search was on. The following year she found one and brought it home. It certainly is a beast.
Any Visionline engine is probably going to cost more than I’m comfortable spending. But if it was a Triplex. It will sell.

Yes MTH had the "steaming" whistle back then before Lionel!

Uhh... I think "several years is a bit of exaggeration.

Thanks John - I stand corrected! Was just getting back into trains at the time and had not discovered this Forum. Which was Lionel's first steamer to offer Whistle steam? Was Lionel first with the feature?

Thinking about it, I recall 2007 MTH first demoed the steaming whistle in a NYC Hudson at York!

The Russian Embassy in NYC has reminded us that Russian scientists invented whistle steam in 1946 and landed the first toy train on the moon in 1968. (attempt at humor, not facts).

That may have actually been the first, it's the first I remember, and it lives on my shelf. I believe it was also the first Vision Line locomotive.
If I am reading the recent threads correctly, the next Vision Line engine will be the Triplex. Mechanically, the MTH version would be hard to beat - it's an amazing piece of machinery, and the two smoke units will fill most rooms very fast! Sound-wise, it could benefit from a Legacy super-sound makeover.
Regardless of what the Vision Line engine will be, 2024 will be the 20th anniversary of the Polar Express movie, and as such I am looking forward to what Lionel will release in that venue . They did an outstanding job on the 10th anniversary back in 2014.

The first Vision locomotive I remember was that odd-looking large Santa Fe 2-10-10-2 with the short tender maybe that must have had the steam effect plus several others wasn't it? Going from memory here so may not be correct!

Lionel Vision Line Engines a Complete List?
This was a topic that was started a bit ago when the VL Big Boys were announced if I recall correctly, or just before. The link is to the reply I made indicating year, model numbers, engine type as well as cab number(s). Have a look, read over the whole topic if you all like. Needs to be updated again as the Big Boys only one is listed.
EZ Catch, Staten Island NY just sent around a notice. It's what some folks predicted, but apparently someone may not want us to know just yet. Pre-order price about $2125 for the loco and $3300 or so for the set (15 cars, including a Vision stock car). So not exactly a bargain, but much less than some feared. I expect that some other dealers will have even lower prices for pre-order. Charles Ro for example.
If Lionel doesn't want this information out until Friday, I will not be insulted if the moderators delete this post, but the cat is out of the bag, so to speak, from one of their dealers.

They didn't fix the incorrect trailing truck on the Virginian, which is numbered with a fantasy #701 (the sole prototype was #700 and a 2-8-8-8-4, not a 2-8-8-8-2 -- Lionel calls it a "what-if reorder"). A bummer . . . I guess we'll never see an accurate VGN triplex.
I will say that's a beautiful freight set, though -- if I was into Erie I'd be all over it.

That wheel slip feature sounds slick! I hope they have a video of it on Friday. I gotta admit I feel bad for Lionel that their stuff gets leaked buuuuuuuut...they're giving info out to dealers and expecting things to stay quiet?
Wow, what a nice engine. Probably $2100.00 after discount, if there's nothing else in the catalog I want, I'll probably order the LCCA custom run Lionel Lines engine.
What is the glow in the dark engine? Is it the Halloween one?
I’m happy for the folks with the Erie Triplex, but I was hoping for somewhat of a more accurate Virginian( including the number 700). I guess I’ll just wait to see what the next Visionline will be.
Despite my disappointment in it being the Triplex, I have to say the wheel slip feature is cool. I've tried to think of a way to do that on a PRR T1, so I'm glad Lionel has figured it out. Maybe we'll see it make its way into other models in the future.

This is on the original Vision Line Big Boys. The wheel doesn't actually slip but there is a sound effect for it.
Also, since the super set has woodside reefers, its probably fair to assume they'll be in the 2024 V1 catalog, which I'm happy about.

My guess is no traction tires on the tender and the engine holds back the train and lets the tender wheels "slip". If this is the case, this locomotive was built for that feature. Not sure this could be done on a standard steam engine. This is all a guess as to be honest. I looked at the posted DropBox so I guess that's as good as it gets.
Seems Lionel has some dealers that need a refreshment in "don't share until Friday" courses. Thank goodness they're not military secrets.
