Train riding today, wife asked what the X stood for in various car four letter combos ending in X (CILX, GTAX, UTAX). I told her I wasn't sure, but bet some forum member would know the answer.
The "X" denotes a private-owner reporting mark, as opposed to a common-carrier (railroad). They are owned by leasing companies, chemical manufacturers, etc.
I believe that is also the reason that the 'official' reporting marks of CSX is CSX'T'. The 'T' stands for Transportation therefore noting it as a transportation company (railroad) rather than a private leasing company.
