There are a few idiosyncrasies I do when storing trains on the shelves where they spend most of their time.  These are probably a waste of time but I wind up doing them anyway.

  • I open all the operating couplers while in storage “to save the springs”.
  • I place all Magna-traction engines on section of steel O27 track to act as keepers and "to save the power of the magnets".
  • I place all engines with traction tires on the shelf with the wheel rims on the wood shelf and do not place them on sections of track "to keep the traction tires from getting flat spots and to extend there life".

I normally have 5 or 6 trains on the layout and several engines in the round house that I do not bother to do these idiosyncrasies.

There is definitely something to #1, the coupler springs (at least for some cars, types of springs, etc.).

I've had quite a few cars with springs that don't release anymore after being compressed in the closed position in storage for too long.

I always do my best to remember to try to keep the couplers in the open position when storing cars in their boxes.
