There is non-recurring cost for adding additional paint schemes to a production run even if old tooing is being used. How trivial is this cost if it is usefull means to increasing the overall quantity of orders for a model?
Like to see someone offer a custom run of the tuscan, single stripe 4907 in "warhorse" style. Faded, dirty, buggy on the fronts with appropriate worn out sounds. Lionel did the JLC tuscan, single stripe 4916. The only two tuscan single stripers. There are hundreds of pictures of dirty, worn out G's out there. I'd be in for one that's ready to be shopped.

I did this weathering to my MTH Conrail 4840 based on photos I found online. To simulate the stenciling, I just put a piece of painter's tape over the CR lettering on the sides to give it that freshly painted look. By the early 1960's you couldn't weather a GG1 enough it seems or any other PRR power for that matter!

I get it. This is taking "Lines West" way too literally!

@NOT LionelLLC any chance METCA will do an Orange and Blue Lionel Lines GG1? Similar to the Hudson Company set of F3s?
@BlueFeather posted:Can anyone confirm that all of the GG1s numbered #4800 in this run will actually have rivets? I see them in the catalog art but let's just say I'm not willing to assume they'll turn out correctly based on that single data point alone.
Did the #4800 GG1s from the 2016 VL run have rivets?
Above are photos of a couple of the Vision Line GG1 releases from the 2016 Lionel Signature Edition catalog.
At top is Old Rivets in its 4899 road number (Lionel 6-83165), and its successor paint scheme post-renumbering to 4800 (Lionel 6-83166).

They're awesome-looking machines, Norman, and I thank you for showing them. I would love to get them this time around, and your pictures motivate me to do so. As I recall, the catalog write-up did them justice, whereas there's nothing written in the latest catalog.
Yeah Paul, they really appeal to me. I’ve never looked at either of these and said to myself “Ahhh, I’ve already got a green Old Rivets! Why do I need this other one?”
I think they would look awesome double-headed, Norman! And PRR did do this in real life, I am 90% certain on that...maybe it was the freight drags...not sure?

Apparently they were triple headed semi-rarely, mostly on freight, and into the PC and Conrail eras. Google searches bring up some interesting pics. I also read a few anecdotes about four GG1s together on heavy coal drags etc. but didn't see any pics and have questions about whether the overhead wires could actually supply that much power.
BTW, the fact that there is still this much interest about the prototype tells me Lionel will have absolutely no problems selling a ton of these, even given the high price. It's a well executed, accurate scale model with a bunch of nice features.
Would somebody please tell me, what is a DGLE?

Dark Green Locomotive Enamel -- an official PRR color. I believe the other main one was Tuscan Red.

Thanks a lot. I think I might order the #4800 old rivets in the DGLE. I always thought it was called Brunswick Green. But I think the darker color of the #4800 might be the DGLE original?
What's curious is the Lionel never mentions 4800 and rivets in the same sentence. You can barely tell from the artwork that there's rivets and if nobody had told me I would never have known. The prologe in the catalog doesn't put 2+2 together and there is no mention of it on the pages depicting the #4800s. Lionel just assumes you know and that's a poor marketing approach.
A nice feature might have been to be able to electonically or even better, mechanically adjust the maximum height of the pantographs if you need them to clear tunnels or other obsatcles. As it is now all you can do is shut them off.

Not sure but I do know that Brunswick Green and DGLE are interchangeably used. DGLE was the official PRR name for the color though.
As I had a toothache and had to travel to my long-time dentist down in Bryn Mawr, PA (been going to him for 30 years now) I took the opportunity to stop in at Nicholas Smith to buy some track and figures and picked up a hard copy of the Lionel catalog. With magnifying glass, I was able to discern what some of you may have already seen with naked eye - rivet detail! Sorry for being a "Doubting Thomas," but you can never sure of these things. It certainly would be nice for some catalog history on Old Rivets. Some younger railfans may not know the fascinating history of this legendary GG1.

Yes it's suprising with a premium product that Lionel would drop the ball on that. The marketing department needs better direction I think.
As someone who missed the first run of these round 2016, I’m excited they are back but the amount of options is overwhelming! I think I’m definitely going in for that gorgeous paint scheme of the American Railroads, that set while pricey looks awesome. I’m also very interested in the aluminum cars, the “Old Rivets” 4800 in the green, and the Mr Muffins custom Bicentennial. I can maybe swing for 2 but idk, lots of money, lots of choices.
I currently have the Trailblazer 7-car passenger set from the mid-2000s when it was offered in conjunction with the S-1 Duplex (first generation, TMCC).
The green steamer looked nice with the cars, but it was too bulky and you had to have your track in absolutely perfect alignment...the slightest deviation could make it derail or awkwardly jerk.
So, I sold it and got the infamous #4866...the red striped matched well with the cars. But then, the 2nd generation GG-1s came out and I wanted an upgrade. So while I was preparing to list the 4866 for sale I started noticing VERY small pieces crumbling off of the trucks as I handled it...I didn't think it was much of an issue and got it sold before everyone was reporting the zinc pest.
Now, I have a Legacy GG-1 #4913 pulling the Trailblazer. The colors are not a match but-- it works.
Then last week, when the Catalogue 2 was released, I was mesmerized by the choices of engine colors and the matching passenger cars offered, and found myself in a "conundrum": I have a red GG-1 that could go with "The Senator" passenger set, and have a red set of passenger cars similar to the "Spirit of St. Louis" that could go with the Green GG-1.
SO....I plan to get "The Senator" passenger set AND the #4859 GG-1!
I know the prices are high, but I am building my "dream layout" so I am going for it!
Yes, the prices of these puppies can cause a man to take a belt or two of whiskey after committing to a pre-order. I rationalize to myself that since I missed the 1st run of Old Rivets - and tried like heck with no luck (didn't want to pay outlandish above MSRP) to find one 2 years after release - that I should pre-order this time around. Notwithstanding the zinc pest issue on the JLC versions, I am currently looking at the various options offered. Thus far, I found Mr. Muffins offering a solid stripe version of Old Rivets; and it's kind of a tie vote between the as-offered Lionel #4800. Has anyone learned of any other custom runs of #4800?
Another custom run, this one directly from Lionel - the Polar Express. While obviously not prototypical , it’s nice looking!
https://www.lionelstore.com/THE-POLAR-EXPRESS-Visionline-GG1-2525
All of the prototypical options are beautiful. But I may pass on them for now. I'd really like a 5-stripe DGLE with the serifed lettering. I don't want to drop over $2k on the freight set, so I may look for a like new VL from the first run or even for a JLC with no zinc rot.
I think the polar express paint looks cool, but with so many other choices, including the custom run from Muffins, it’s tough to choose. Decisions…
