Picked up an MTH station with the disapearing people. Man, when one button pressed, those poor seated people get a fast ride up and their faces bashed into the station roof underside. When the other button is pressed, they get a backward ride and slammed back into their station benches! Ouch!

I have one too. It's a fun accessory... for us anyway Those passengers might think differently
While I don't have one yet, I think that is the neatest accessory made in the last decade or so. Have they only made the one run of it, or are there multiple catalog numbers/ colors of it?

This is a neat accessory but when the train blocks the view to the station platform the catapult action is disguised. Like other products that they made, MTH may have only run this accessory once.
I bought this for my grandson about 5 years ago. At the time, I think it came in a few station name and color variations. One may have come as "baggage only" as well.
As said, it's ideal if the train blocks the action.
I went on Mth's website, and discovered that you can search for older products by description, and not just product number or roadname.
So typing in disappearing passenger brought up 4 of these platforms, with the last one being made in 2011.

The best one is the one with the Army/Navy guys....
Are the people scale size or are they smaller?
With the station people down, I point out to my grandson the people are waiting for the train. As the passenger train pulls into the station, the view is blocked and if you are sneaky enough, you can hit the switch and when the train leaves, there are no people. Now, you know he is going to ask the question. " pop, where did the people go?. " The only answer is " They got on the train. " Simple to us. Amazing to them. Keep em interested in Model railroading.
Just remembered, I have a video of mine in operation demonstrating the "boarding passengers". It's partway into this video that I made last year.
There are several of the baggage platform versions on ebay at the moment... the one with the people is funnier.
One minute these poor folks are admiring a neat bicentennial color scheme, thinking they are safe since it's hauling freight. But, in a split second.....
