This may seem like a no brainer, but since I've kinda leaned towards the more inexpensive tinplate train market rather than the more often very expensive scale market recently, I've noticed that some of the newer tinplate rolled out by MTH has become a bit harder to acquire.

For example, I recently sold my prized Lionel Classics Blue Comet set in favor of a version with Proto 2 or 3 (yes, it was tough to say goodbye to it). The funny thing is when I sold it on the bay, it sold for much more than I thought it would (Almost $150 more specifically). In the same turnabout, actually finding a new Proto 2 or 3 Blue Comet set is proving to be a challenging hunt during this Thanksgiving season.

It may be just the popularity of this set in particular, but to me, it seems tinplate trains get more popular during the busiest, most jolly time of the year. Which makes sense overall, since tinplate really fits in the overall Christmas mood.

Your probaby going to have to just start calling dealers to find them.  I have found thier websites never show everything they have in stock.  I would go thru all the ones that appear above, then go from there.  I know Mr Muffins has a large MTH selection but cant remember if I saw that passenger car set there.  He has way more than I can find on his site. Should be a beautiful set running under the tree!  And it gets harder and more expensive to find and buy any toy train this time of year Good Luck with the hunt.  Mike

Dave,

I understand where you're coming from.

I will be keeping the next version of the Blue Comet I buy, as pretty much every other tinplate train I'm buying now. I still have my Rail Chief set to go with the scale Hudson, and I plan on holding onto that like a life support.

That makes a beautiful set to run around the Christmas tree, and is sure to be a treasure long after my generation.

You should check for yourself, but I compared the nickel trim cars from the 80's to the PS3 engine and I could not see a difference.

I think, in general, MTH never produced tinplate o gauge in very big numbers so they are often hard to find, but if you are patient, you can get them for pretty good prices from the big auction houses.

Brian,

It's the O gauge version from a couple years back.

Thomas - I've done some research and show that you may be in luck.

Pat's Trains has the blue comet cars in stock.  Please see the link:

As for the locomotive, I believe that The Train Room has that in stock as well.  I wasn't able to verify this, but I've ordered from them before and found that they've always had what I was looking for.  Their number is 301-745-6681.

I hope this information leads you to success!!

Thomas,

Man can I understand what you mean, my original 263E is now on display in my brother's (Frank L. Right & student designed) home, down in Washington County, it's still in the family however!  Your new MTH P2 Blue Comet version will be a great hand me down train also, that is exactly what my Gun Metal Gray MTH 263E is, and I love it.  When the battery starts to go bad, replace it with a BCR, they work great in this manner.

Happy Thanksgiving to you down in Somerset County!

PCRR/Dave
