Is the remote that comes with a TIU "paired" to a particular TIU, or can it be used with any TIU?  I have two DCS sets (one for my Christmas layout and one for my permanent layout).  They have both been in storage for several years while we were in the process of building a house and moving.  I'm breaking them out this week to update the software on the remotes and TIUs.  What I would like to do is clone one remote to the other (the permanent layout has more engines in it), so I ideally can use both remotes with each TIU (as well as the wifi app once I get that set up).  Do I need to worry about which remote goes with TIU before I start the updates, or does it not matter?

Thanks in advance for any advise and tips (been reading through the threads on doing the update as well my older copy of Barry's Companion).

Chris,

Multiple remotes may be used with multiple TIUs, separately or at the same time.

I'm breaking them out this week to update the software on the remotes and TIUs.

Make absolutely certain that all TIUs and remotes have the exact same version of DCS installed.

What I would like to do is clone one remote to the other (the permanent layout has more engines in it), so I ideally can use both remotes with each TIU (as well as the wifi app once I get that set up).

That would be a good way to proceed. Just ensure that each TIU's DCS ID# (1-5) is unique and that both remotes have both TIU's DCS ID#'s.

Do I need to worry about which remote goes with TIU before I start the updates, or does it not matter?

That does not matter.

DCS Book CoverThis and a whole lot more about DCS is all in MTH’s “The DCS Companion 3rd Edition!"

This book is available from many fine OGR advertisers and forum sponsors, or as an eBook or a printed book at MTH's web store!

To expand a little, the short answer is no. All remotes can work with any TIU.  The way you can control which TIU a remote works with is by giving the TIU an address between 1 and 5.  If a remote is only told to look at TIU 3.  That is all it will work with.  But it will work with any TIU numbered 3.

You know what number your TIU is by the number of times the LED flashes at power up.

You can change the number at any time. And you can tell a remote to look for any TIU number.  G

I have two DCS sets (one for my Christmas layout and one for my permanent layout).

This might lead to problems if both tiu have the same ID  number and if  both layouts are powered up at the same time.

If both (layouts) are powered up at once  you would have to change the address of one of the tiu...  Now if you want to  clone the remotes you would have to operate in super mode.... It's easy, and gives the option of any engine, anywhere on either layout..   I've been operating this way for years with the dcs remote, can't speak about wi-fi- though.

Chris,

Make sure you take Barry and Johns advise seriously, if you mismatch the DCS versions some wild things can happen.  I had a major run away because of the mismatch set up. Barry finally straightened me out.  I never realized the mismatch units could cause big problems until the train was flying off the 3rd level of my layout.  Happened so fast I could not even hit the E-Stop button in time.
