To this point all my motive power has been MTH Protosound 2.0 or 3.0, the layout is being built for command control only, with DCS at this time.

However, with the recent catalogs, and couple older Lionel offerings I find myself wanting to run some Lionel as well.

Do you think I should buy the basic Cab1 set up, which are on-line used for around $100 / $125, or bite the bullet and by a Legacy system.

Thoughts, views, random musings.... all welcome.

Thanks,

Jason

It would be nice to buy the Legacy system if you could find one, but they are in short supply as you might have read on other threads.

I would suggest the Cab1L system, then upgrade to Legacy when the new ones are available, if you wanted to.

The Cab1L will run any TMCC and Legacy engine, in TMCC mode. YOu will get the Legacy quilling whistle function as well, on engines so equipped.

Is there an older Legacy system?  I have wanted the Legacy system for several years but I recently ordered it and found out it wasn't available until the "factory ships".  Was there a legacy system before the 990?  I can't believe we have had Legacy engines for several years and there wasn't a control system.

Would someone explain this situation....

Legacy 990 has been around since 2007, but the remake units have been held up due to some component problems reportedly.

Used original Legacy sets can be found but prices may be kind of crazy, especially on ebay.

Looks like per the other threads, these will be ready the third of never.... great.

Thanks for the advise, I do appreciate it.

Yes, the 990 full Legacy setup is the one you want. And yes it has been backordered for many months. They will be available again sometime (soon I hope) and that is the one to get.

I bought my first Legacy engine last Sept. and ordered a Legacy 990 at the same time. Had no idea it would take this long, but I am reasonably certain Lionel is doing all they can to make them available again (as this is their top of the line product). As others have said, get one on order now so you don't miss out on this next batch.

There is the Cab-1L/Base-1L which is available now, but unless you want to end up with 2 sets with one not able to operate all Legacy functions, I would wait, that's my plan anyway.  Or, you could get the Cab/Base-1L and have a back up if your Legacy system ever had to go in for repair. You would also have an additional remote to operate at least the TMCC functions of your engines.

A third option might be to try to pick up an old TMCC (Cab-1) Base and MTH 50-1032 cable and use that with your DCS to operate your Lionel stuff until the Legacy's are available again. I think that's all you would need, but I'm not up on all the older Lionel stuff. Like you, I only have DCS right now and all but 1 of my engines are MTH.

Jason:  The "original" TMCC system is no longer available from Lionel.  Might be a few still out there in dealer's hands.  But the new Legacy system is so superior that there's no reason to even want the old system.  If you do have some TMCC equipped engines, the new Legacy system will operate them just as well as the Legacy engines.  You can now get a Legacy controller that looks like the old TMCC Cab I controller but has an internal antenna and, again, will perfectly handle both systems, both frequencies and can even operate the Legacy "Quillable" whistle system  Only it does not offer the screen that can give you some indications back from the engine.

Point is, pick up the best deal you can get on Legacy and you'll be covered for all TMCC/Lionel command control systems.  My only question about which system to use, DCS or Legacy is which engine, a Lionel or an MTH, I want to run.
