Allow me to try this again! No idea what happened the first time.

I need tires. Looking to fit steam loco wheel, appears to be 1 3/8" or 31mm OD. Engines are NYC 4-6-4's..... 1998 to 2001 era. Only engine #'s, 5412 & 5405, no boxes to get "real" numbers, no manual. I am sure someone here can help with proper numbers and source. It looks like a product number could be 30-1146-1.....as a guess.

I am going to the MTH site to see if any of my info cross refs with any of theirs, and may wind up calling Midge, but I would like to have part numbers to give her.

I know this has never happened to any of you but, I have spare tires....someplace. Just can't figure out where that place is at the moment! And, they are quite old when I do find them, I am guessing "new" tires are just that, not NOS and oxidizing and wearing out. That heat shrink sounds good...but I don't think I have any that large a diameter. Anyone still using Frog Snot? I never did, but Walt's Train Shop had some one time. I thought I would rather use silicone...but silicone is fairly slippery. Seemed kind of "oxymoronish" to me, though I have read on here some people tried it.

The bay has several sellers, one lives in the attic, seems those tires are special ..they run about $3 each. Is that the standard price now? I have not bought any in 10 years. Thanks for reading and putting up with this....and perhaps responding.

Maybe I can get some help now.Greg (I looked at several old threads  before deciding best to try to post  here on this one. My apologies if I am guilty of some infraction I am not aware of.)   Oh, and I AM still under a rock!

I did get one reply, here it is:

My, you’ve been under a rock for a minute now!, ….havent ya?……Midge has long since retired, so there’s no calling her. Traction tires are available from mthpartsandsales.com now, and there’s no phone number to call. With that said, I think you have Railking Hudsons, but to be 100% sure, and beings you don’t have the boxes, for concrete proof, post up pictures of your two engines in question. That’ll solve the mystery. Then we’ll recommend tires best suited for your engines …..

Thank you for that. I sent MTH an email prior to seeing your numbers. I did a search on their site, and found Item # DE1602001000 tires for $1.50 each.....but they were out of stock, and also for HO. No other tires showed up, just wheel sets. Perhaps they will respond.

Those product numbers above will help if they have any, I directed them to this post....someone there may monitor this stuff anyway. As stated above, Pat says I live under a rock, and he is probably correct.

Appreciate your time, and input, gotta pull the rock back over me and hide for awhile. Greg

For anyone else following this, FYI: MTH seems to be great, along with the members of this forum! Several took the time to contact me. Special thanks to Brian and Melvin.

I wrote to MTH INFO early this morning, with instructions "no rush, busy season for them" and all that. Some nice soul at INFO wrote back almost immediately - less than 45 minutes later! Had the tire number, plus a link to the pdf with ALL tires cross referenced to MTH engines, and giving me the webpage to order mine. Can't expect any better service than that!

Since I own a dozen of their engines, and they are all like me...old....sounds like when I order I should do multiples for my engines, especially if I can get a layout up - next year and actually spin tires. Who knows, maybe I will make it a priority to do so, the first of next year!

I was also informed about Midge's retirement and told she is doing well. 5 star reviews for MTH service.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL.  Greg

I resuscitate this since the Christmas train season is fast approaching, and I wanted to remind anyone who will need tires, they might want to act now, before MTH gets REALLY busy. It was December of last year when I last posted here about these. Even some Lionel users might want to prepare for the holiiday season.

I found MTH to be very responsive, with great support and easy purchasing, along with (this surprised me) lower prices! I am sure Lionel treats their customers just as well.  This is just a heads up for those of us who just run trains seasonally.
