I think I have some of the answer, but maybe not all. My TIU and Z1000 transformers are out of easy reach. I'd like to able to turn off track voltage, so I can turn off passenger lights.
The solution I found is use the Variable Channels and turn off fxd voltage in DCS setup.
Is there a way to do this on the DCS Channels?
Is there a drawback to turning the fxd voltage on and off? I plan to remember to stop any trains, before hitting the button.

You can actually run the variable channels in fixed mode and still turn them off from the remote, just select the TR(ack) in question and press the TZV softkey and it'll kill the power from that channel.
There's no drawback that I know of changing the FXD setting, but it's really not necessary.
Does the "fixed 1" on the TIU default to a track number on the remote or how would one find this?

The fixed channels can only be turned off by doing the emergency stop, that kills all the channels. The TRx is only for the two variable channels.

Also bu using Z4K Tracks.
Of course, Z4K Tracks are only for folks that have a Z4000 and the remote receiver, not exactly a universal configuration. The OP has Z1000 bricks. It's also not really part of the DCS system, you're cheating Barry!

So, you're saying I can use Z4K tracks without a Z4000 and the remote receiver? That's certainly news to me! How do you do that?

No, John, that's not the case. My statement was in disagreement with your designating Z4K Tracks as not being part of DCS. Of course one needs a Z4000 and receiver.
Do you also designate control of accessories and switch tracks as not being part of DCS because an AIU is required?
Both are parts of DCS that require additional hardware in order to be utilized, and both functions are part of the overall DCS system.
Well, we're don't to splitting hairs, but I'll yield the point that it is part of DCS. My point was that he wouldn't be able to use them as he apparently doesn't have a Z4000.
