I don't use Lionel Fast Track....my layout will be GG and Ross. But after getting a lot of roadbed down today I thought why not use the Fast Track I have collected from sets for the subway line as most will be hidden. So I dug it out of storage and found there are two different types of Fast Track!?!?! Why?? They do not connect so it means I have to buy two pieces to complete the subway as I do not have enough of wither to finish it. When and why????

All Lionel Fastrack connects to any other vintage Lionel Fastrack. I suspect you have something else. Both MTH and Williams have similar track systems with plastic roadbed.
How about some pictures?
Pics??
The early fastrack had a blackened center rail, but still connected to the later fastrack.
Pictures would be nice, if you please.
Yes you must have 2 brands of track. Early MTH also had a black center rail that came off on the rollers.

Maybe its Atlas O Industrial Rail Roadbed track which is strikingly similar to fastrack in "appearance".
when did fastrack originally come out anyway?
Yep......it's not Lionel. Let me explain my ignorance.....
As I said I just thought of using the Fast Track for the subway. Pulled a box in storage that said Lionel track. Then another box that said the same. Not familiar with Fast Track I didn't know Fast Track from what turns out to be Atlas brand Fast Track type. I had forgotten Atlas did anything like this so it never crossed my mind. Then I could not figure out how I got the Atlas.......WbB Christmas 2-6-0 set!! They look similar.
The Atlas track is pretty nice looking but IIRC not a lot of different track available.

That is, in fact, Atlas Industrial Rail track.
It is great track both in looks and function. My favorite road bed track.
It really is a shame that it never became a full track system. Although you can probably still find transition track pieces to connect it tubular rail track.

If it is hidden why not use both? Shim for height, forget the pins, and screw it down, then feed each type seperately, but off the same buss.
You can tell it's Atlas by the 3 little "blips" on the ties at the ends. Color of ballast, also.
Those two do look very similar except for the ends, I can see where you could confuse it. I suspect that if you look on the underside, it probably says Atlas.

It does.......But when I pulled the box that said 'Lionel track' it was the Atlas......and forgetting the Atlas stuff.....thought it was Lionel. But after you all said it was other....I looked on the bottom. I'll offer the Atlas track on the OGR sell forum soon. THX

The first set I bought that had the blackened center rail was in 2003. I think that was the year FasTrack was introduced.
