Hi all

I just picked up one of these;the cord was cut,but after I added a replacement plug,it works fine, and all the voltage posts check out OK. Of course,I figured it would, as I have yet to encounter ANY post war Lionel (or Flyer) that could not be made to function after the most minor of care.

I am not familiar with this particular model. A quick "net" search shows it was available in 1947 only, but that's about it. It is not in my (1985) Greenberg Repair and Ops Manual, and so I'm hoping someone out there has an owner's sheet they'd be willing to scan and send along...

My original Lionel set I received in 1947 had a Type S transformer.  I no longer have the instruction sheet for it but as you can see it has 4 terminals (A, B, C & U), not 5 like on the similar looking RW.  I used to use A-U for variable voltage control of the train and B-C for accessories which provided 14 fixed volts.

I found out the hard way that the type S transformers are not very common as it took me years to find a nice one to replace my original transformer which was lost in a move.

In addition to being made only in 1947, the type S has a few other distinctions:

  • it is the only cataloged post-war Lionel transformer with an output of 80 watts
  • it is the only lettered-ID Lionel transformer with a built-in whistle controller which doesn’t end with a “W” because starting in 1948, all lettered post-war transformers with whistle controllers had a catalog ID (“number") ending with a “W”.

The Type S is pretty simple.

The "U" post goes to the center rail, you can pick "A" or "B" for the outside rail / Common depending on the voltage needs of the train(see the voltages on the dial - 10-19 or 5-14 -  for an idea of the output using these two combinations).

The "C" post is a fixed voltage tap... 19 volts using "A" as common, 14 volts if using "B" as common.
