I have my friend Dave's MTH 30-1659-1 Hudson. He asked if I could change the sound file from what was originally on his engine to a NYC sound set. I have done at least 50 sound file changes on PS2 engines over the past several years for myself & friends without ever a problem. This was the 1st PS3 I've attempted to do and have had no success what so ever! I've searched the forum for a possible fix (I usually am able to find an answer to any problem), but this time I'm stumped. I am running the latest software for the MTH Loader and TIU (it's an early version TIU with no revision letter, NOT a rev. L). I am able to start the download, but am unable to get past 1%, sector 1 of the download. I've tried running 20 feet of 16 gauge wire on my feed from the TIU to the track. It seems to help a little, but not that much more. Once, I was able to get up to 6% of the download, but that was running with the 20 foot of wire and an hour and a half running time on the loader! I don't have a DC power supply I can run, as was a suggestion in the forum. The engine was OK before the download, but will not startup in DCS or convention mode now! I haven't seen any real problems with PS3 downloads on the forum. I have Barry's "DCS Companion 2nd Edition", I was unable to find my problem under PS3 engines. Is this a problem that needs to be sent back to MTH? Any help from the forum would be greatly appreciated!

Enginear-Joe, I don't have a DC power supply available to me. The TIU finds the engine with no problem and starts the download process. It makes it thru writing to the "0" sector with a little difficulty, than the best it makes it through sector "1" is about 80% (according the the graph bar). It'll than erase and try to write again to the sector several more times, never making it more than 80%!

Try putting it on a test track with only a few feet of track.  It's advisable to power this short test track with about 25 feet of wire to properly load the TIU signal output.  For added reliability of loading the file, use DC power through one of the fixed channels of the TIU.  For a Rev. L TIU, you don't need any light bulbs, for any earlier one, they're not a bad idea.

The best known remedy is to use DC power.

However, i must confess that with my bench test setup I've never had issues using the following:

  • Rev I3 TIU
  • Postwar KW with external fuse
  • A short piece of Gargraves track connected to Fixed #1 with alligator clips
  • No light bulb and no coil of wire.

Success every time, including chain file transfers.

I'd try using a different TIU channel and then a different engine.

If another PS2 engine can accept a sound file, then the issue is most likely the engine. If not, it's most likely the TIU, or at least one channel.

Barry, I've never had a problem with downloading sound files in any PS2 engines, and I've done at least 50 file downloads into engines. The only possible solution I haven't tried is the DC power. I switched TIU inputs as you suggested and got the same results. I'm starting to think maybe there's a problem with the memory in the engine, as it will only load a small portion of the file. Maybe a bad chip or somet6hing like that. I consider your advice the ultimate! I have to dig out one of my PS2 engines (My layout is un-assembled for re-construction) and check to make sure it's not the TIU. Barry and all the rest of everyone, thanks for your input/help on this problem. I have to look into getting a DC power supply if the TIU is OK.

OK Barry, I guess I figure I'd go with all the loading "enhancements" and see if it will load.  I'm starting to believe that it may be an issue with the locomotive, though I think I'd look at connections and the like before replacing boards.  It's curious it has stopped in different places, that would indicate to me that it's not the memory chips.

Marty, tried unplug/replug all the plugs.....NG. I wished it was nothing more than a bad connection at one of those plugs. The engine is going back to MTH for repair. I really believe something like a chip or component on the circuit board went bad. Thanks for your advice! This forum has given me an education on DCS I could never get anywhere else!!!

From my training at MTH the coil of wire is recommended. The coil helps to tone down the signal. The analogy used was "its like having a conversation with somebody sitting next to you and screaming as loud as you can". Try 25 feet of wire between the TIU and track and see if it will take the software
