Here's some books and authors from the UPHS on passenger cars trains.
Most can be found reasonably on Amazon or the bay.
Normally, sleeping cars are at the rear, with the dining car separating them from the coaches. -- further from the locomotive noise, and, in steam days, from the cinders or soot of the steam engine.

Well, they were first used in '45 and caught on pretty quickly, so it could have happened.

it will differ depending on which train you want to model. e.g. City of Portland, City of Los Angeles, Portland Rose, Columbine, etc. they each had their own set up and, depending on year, had variations within the consist.

I was unaware of the diffrences I thought that they were all set up and ran the same way
I have a Big Boy Passenger set and I am looking to add the two tone grey cars to it and was trying to figure what of each type of car I needed to work up a long consist for a Public Display
