Hello, All,
In the late 2000's, as intermodal freight service continued to focus more on 40/45ft and 53 ft containers, US railroads found themselves with 1000s of 48ft well cars that didn't match the bulk of the container traffic. To allow for more efficient handling of the growing international business, the decision was made to optimize many 48ft cars for 40ft containers. Greenbrier received orders to cut down several thousand well cars for BNSF and TTX. The result was the below 5-car articulated wagons as modeled below.
I think these have the same capacity as the more common Maxi-I cars. These are fairly common on the rails in both TTX markings and in brown BNSF scheme. I made these out of MTH husky stacks which I cut down and made other modifications to match the prototype.
The strange thing about this set is, I don't think these are manufactured commercially in any scale. I don't see why HO or N modelers would demand them since they can already get Maxi-I's for their 40 ft containers. Has any one seen these in any scale of model railroading?
Martin
