Hi, Alex.

As someone for whom marine railroading is a topic of great interest, I would like to compliment you on work in building the car ferry and thank you for sharing it with us. As a lifelong resident of the region, I very much enjoy researching information pertaining to the extensive railroad marine operations which were conducted in and around New York City, as well as the countless railroad facilities which quite literally lined all waterfront shores in the vicinity of New York Harbor.

Thank you again.

Bob

Alex......once again you have blown me away with your skills as a model builder. I can only imagine what you have in store for us as far as the interior of the cabin goes. When she is done will she display the Malliae flag until the transfer of ownership?

At the risk of looking like a fool, which I am pretty good at by the way, is the green NYC boxcar on the wrong pair of rails? It appears to me that there is only 1 rail to the left of the car as well as a single rail between the 2 boxcars. As I said I am probably missing something obvious.

Good afternoon all,

Thanks to all for your very kind comments, Alan, Jay, Steve, Jeff, Jim, Big truck Pete, Alan G, John, Joe, and O gauger.

Coloradohiraile, Yes it looks much better with two rails. I thank you

Bob (CNJ 3676) I'm glad you enjoyed the post. I thank you

Strogey I'm not totally sure I had the freight cars on the correct rails at the time of the photo's. I would say you might be correct. I thank you

Ben you got it, just give me the sizes and one or two close up photos and consider it done.

Again thanks to all, Alex

Like you, gunrunnerjohn, I appreciate Alex's talent and the projects he's made but there are times too that I've missed some of his project photo posts as well as posts/photos of other members' worthwhile projects.
I offer this observation as to how that can possibly happen and a practical way to help alleviate or at least minimize the future likelihood of members missing similar posts.
Many of this type of post are frequently placed on the 3 Rail  O27, Hi Rail and Classic O Gauge Forum which is the busiest forum with the greatest number of daily postings. So, for example, when Alex of others post their projects there and other forum members begin posting compliments and praise of that builder's skill and craftsmanship and the original poster in turn respectfully acknowledges those compliments with words of thanks, then the original post with pictures gets bumped to the second page in hardly no time at all and then eventually pushed back to the third page and within a day it can easily be buried multiple pages deep. For someone who misses checking the forum daily, such a post could be missed entirely unless they're in the habit of digging multiple pages deep whenever they visit this forum.
So might I suggest [hoping no one takes offence] that posts involving such structures with photos be posted on either the  Layout Building Forums Scenery and Structures Forum OR the Photo Albums Forum.
By posting them on such logical forums as these, people would know exactly which forum to visit to seek out other members' building efforts. Furthermore, since those forums have fewer posts, it'd be easier to find such buildings posts and photos.
Also with those types of posts no longer on the 3 Rail  O27, Hi Rail and Classic O Gauge Forum there would be fewer posts on that 3 Rail forum and any posts that are there possibly wouldn't be bumped as quickly to a page further back,
Agree with me or not, that's just my 2 cents. My thoughts and opinion are offered in the spirit of helping make this site more efficient and easier to use and not to deprecate anyone or their methodology of posting.

Hey Alex, If you need help some weekend, would be great to be a fly on the wall and observe the master at work. I might even learn something! LOL Seriously, I will making my own feeble attempts soon and would like to make less errors than more! Either way, keep up the great work and will be keeping an eye on your projects! Kenn,

While I do agree with you that this thread and many others on the 3 rail forum belong in the other sections, I have my reasons for posting them here.

1st- When I used to post them on the other sections, I would only get 5 views/replies and hardly anyone on the forum will see what I did. I'm not saying this to get replies, it's because I enjoy helping folks anyway I can so if I'm on the 3 rail section my posts will be seen by many. I really enjoy helping my fellow forum members.

2nd- I'm a 3 rail section guy,it's my favorite part of the forum I'm on it 95 % of the time.

3rd- In the past I've seen other forum members post items in the other sections only to just waste away to the second and third page in those sections as well. To me that's a shame.

4th- I post my work on the 3 rail forum because I think it's quiet helpful to my fellow forum members and I'm thrilled that they post their work here to. So many many folks can view, reply and make suggestions and comments.

To me this forum is to help each other out and post our work and great idea's

and have civil conversations. Most of all, to enjoy it and have fun.  If Gunrunner John (or anyone) posted his awesome thread somewhere else it would have received only a few views or replies and only a few folks would have seen it there. To me that's a shame.

I'm a member of this forum for 3 years now, and I've learned so much from the 3 rail section with the great idea's that have been posted here.  To sum it up, the 3 rail forum is where all the action is, and that's where I enjoy posting.

Alex....I just had to say it again....what a great project!!  You are doing a masterful job at capturing the feeling and looks of the car ferry....love it!!

On another note....to comment about what forum to post on....I am with you Alex on this one.  May I respectfully suggest to Ken and others that may feel they have missed or will miss great threads like this.  All you have to do is follow that person's posts and you will get an e-mail letting you know when they have started or commented on a thread.  Then you will have a direct link to it no matter what page it is on....

I will agree with Alex in that the 3-rail forum has the greatest chance of reaching and helping those that need, appreciate, and enjoy the wide variety of talent and topics over here.  I enjoy all of the forums and believe me have made an effort to support more than just the 3-rail forum but found that the much larger feedback I get over here has helped me be a better modeler and inspired me....this is kind of a melting pot of all levels of talent.  I for one believe we can all learn from each other and appreciate what we each bring to the hobby....  To each his own but IMHO if one is not checking out the 3-rail forum, they are missing out on some fantastic posts just like this thread!!!

Thanks,

Alan

Alex,

You hinted at this project when you were at my home delivering Penn Station.

I haven't had time till now to look for the thread. WOW!! As always your attention to detail is amazing.  BTW, I am still getting complements on Penn Station and also the lightbox that made for me.

Jim,

The layout in my imagination always had a waterfront scene with car floats as extra storage. I can't wait to see the finished car ferry project on your layout.

Got to see this project in person last week.  The pictures do not do it any justice  Its an awesome piece.  All you Michigan guys should be lining up for the next one Alex makes.

In my opinion we have too many subforums now  I don't have the time or the urge to go checkk all of them  I like just perusing the titles in the 3 rail forum only  Every once in awhile the subway forum draws me but thats it.

Good evening everyone,

I'm thrilled today, Jim had asked me about 10 days ago or so about adding smoke to the stacks. So I've been working on it for quite a few days and I was able to finish it today. Here's some of the details, I purchased a Lionel 27 ohm smoke unit from Box Car Bill (thanks Bill ) and I had to do a lot of modifications to get this to work. So what I did first was attach a Number 8 1/4 aluminum spacer to the exhaust hole of the smoke unit, next I drilled out the other end of the spacer just slightly so I could slip the 1/4 plastic tubing into the spacer. I had to make a tee fitting so the smoke would exhaust out of both stacks. So I drilled very carefully into the 1/4 tubing and made openings, now I slipped the tubing into the openings and used J-B Weld to permanently seal and lock all the joints together. There will be intake ports cut into the base soon so the smoke unit can get even more air.

THANKS TO ALL FOR LOOKING,

Alex

Will there be any problem filling the reservoir? Will the fluid get all way down to the unit or stick to the tube?

I put a smoke unit in a building with a 6" tube, I have no problem filling it.  I just have to blow in the tube after filling and all is well.  I also split out the smoke to drive two stacks from a fan driven unit.
