Anyone have experience upgrading one of these?  I have the opportunity to do one but am concerned about enough space to put the tach reader on the flywheel.  Looks like a pretty tight fit. It's a huge Pittman motor and the flywheel is on the back side in the cabin.  I believe this was produced in the 90s, it's a brass engine and tender.  Tender is huge and fitting the PS2 boards and speaker will not be a problem.  Tender currently has a QSI board, 9v battery and speaker. I have not taken the engine apart just looked at it from the outside, that is why I am asking.  If there are any other obstacles to this upgrade let me know.

Dave,

I have upgraded my B&LE 3rd Rail 2-10-4 to PS2.  The biggest problem I have encountered with non MTH engines is fitting the socket in the back of the engine.  I have had to mill some of the frames to make a pocket for the tether socket to fit correctly.  The other thing to watch for is the routing of wires in the boiler.  3rd rail uses a belt drive and the wiring harness goes through the middle of it.  Other than that, just take your time.

Good luck!

Dave
