I have a new hp laptop and it has windows 8 I have a usb-serial cable from radio shack which i tried to use and ran the software for it on the laptop I get an error message that there is no serial port on this laptop, Do I need to get a newer cable for windows 8?

You have to select the serial port manually in the MTH software when using Windows 8

I had a similiar problem. I had to get a new cable with updated software for windows 7/8. You might be able to use the cable if you set up Windows XP virtual on your windows 8 and try to run the loader program under xp. I ended up buying a new cable on Ebay make sure they indicate it is Windows 8 compatible. Good luck.
The latest versions of the TIU have a USB port on them, that is what I use
