Folks,

I am having a problem with my DCS.  The Variable 2 channel is constantly putting out 1-3 volts ( it varies) even with 0 volts going in. I get the same range of voltages regardless of the voltages going in.

Initially I thought I wasn't getting any voltage so I opened it up to check the fuses.  All tested good although one of them did have a darkened top to it.  Since it tested OK I left it in.  Now I am wondering if it is actually bad.  I don't know the placement of the fuses as it relates to the 4 channels So I don't know if that fuse was for the Var 2 channel.    I plan on opening it up tomorrow to replace that fuse. The 3 other channels seem to be working fine. This unit is revision L.

i was hoping someone would  chime in with some suggestions for other things to check.

Thanks,

Ed

GRJohn,

I just acquired another TIU this one happens to be a 4.2, my old rev L has never had any problems, I was thinking about having it upgraded to a 4.2.  John should I be concerned that something could change with the rev L, if I have it upgraded to 4.2.  At this time I do not want my 4.2 or the Rev L to be upgraded to 4.3, the 4.3 seem to have to many problems, until they eliminate the problems, I will stay with the 4.2 and P2.  Should I have the Rev L upgraded to 4.2, Bill just made my DCS hand held remote Control recharageable, it is definitely way cool.  I will send the Rev L off to Greg for upgrading to 4.2 if there is not going to be a problem having it done, my other hand held remote will go to Bill for upgrading to a rechargable, he can put the new wheel in at the same time.  That will give me 2 rechagable DCS hand held remotes and (2) 4.2 TIU's for the up coming Christmas layout.  If the Legacy ever arrives, my Command Control switches will all work also, if not I may have to invest in an older Cab unit.

I have eliminated the AIU wiring completely at this point.

Just to be clear, 4.30 has a few bugs, only one of which, IMO, even approaches being "moderately severe":

  • A couple of lashup lighting discrepancies. all of which have workarounds
  • Smoke comes on for all lashups at startup. While not actually a bug, it would be better to have it be settable and remembered from startup-to-startup
  • Turning off engine sounds in a lashup only turns off the lead engine’s sounds. This should be corrected so that the ENG SOUND button on the remote affects all lashup members, not just the lead unit

  • Some engines have flickering lights in lashups. However, this is corrected in the current 4.31 beta
  • A very small number of people (2-3) have reported that, intermittently, turning smoke on/off will also turn off an engine's lighting. The engine typically needs to be feature reset to get the lights back on.

The problem does not happen, it appears, on the great majority of layouts.Twice, on my layout, I've started up an engine that I haven't run for a while and pressed the Smoke button to turn off smoke (my default is smoke "on" because I'm concerned that there's little fluid in the smoke unit. I then noticed that lights were off. However, after a feature rest to  turn lights back on, I can't get pressing smoke to turn them off again, even after pressing the Smoke On/Off a dozen times.

The last issue is the one that I would deem to be the most "severe" of the 4.30 bugs.
