Very Large Scale LED question:

I'd probably get rid of all the stuff except the LED's on that panel and then use a 1/2W 560 ohm resistor in series with each of them to the 12V supply.  That will light them continuously, if you want to switch them, we can talk.

Continuously is the plan, and thanks, it is a fun project, all the parts are original for this car.

Gunrunner John has it right.

Don't use any of the circuitry on those boards. Just cut the leads to the existing LEDs (thankfully the leads have some extra wire to work with) and power them with 12 volts DC and the 560 ohm resistor John suggested. The board even shows you which lead on the LED is negative. It looks like that board has seen better days anyway. Lots of ugly solder work there.

What a neat thing to have in your train room!

Hi Rich, Thanks for the advice, John is an invaluable help to all of us. the board has seen many days since 1957 to the early 60's when these cars were made for the City of New York, every part on there is original OEM. I forgot to mention, on the other side of the cab is the men's room. I still have to hang the motorman's cab door and the sink. It's a work in progress.

Somewhere in my vast collection of souvenirs that happened to fall off a wall and into my luggage, while traveling around the UK and Europe, is a sign:

"Passengers will please refrain from flushing toilets whilst the train is standing at the station platform."

Any of the 1/2 watt 560 ohm resistors would be fine.  A couple of those links were for assorted values.  I'm partial to real electronic supply houses, I'm 100% sure of what I'm getting.  Shipping for first class from Digikey is $4.99, so you can have a hundred of these for a little over $7, and they're a known quality.

Back in the 70's, I was traveling by train in Sweden and had to make use of the facilities.  While standing at the commode, I felt a great wind.  I looked down through the commode and saw the track ties going by.  Different...  BTW, they also had a sign on the door to the restroom to not use it when in the station!

John, can you recommend a transformer I can use, the space I have for it is 3” deep, 9x9 square to keep it hidden. I was thinking of an open transformer like the one in the basement that’s used for the door bell. Here’s a picture of the one I used for testing. I’ve had it since the late 70s

thank you for that, I have another question sir,  I want to be able to power a light two different ways, to prevent a back feed while using switch A, what type of Diode would I use. Looking on Digikey, there’s thousands of them. 🤦‍♂️

If we're talking about LED's, any diode should do it.  The 1N4003 is my "go to" general purpose diode that I use for many of my projects.  It's cheap, handles up to 1 amp, and the reverse voltage rating is 200V.

I barely was able to negotiate with the CEO for 32 sq ft for my layout. How were you able to pull that off?

I bet that horn would blow the windows out of the house at full pressure.
