About 100 lbs of Harmon heft. The Super 381 and a regular MTH 381 were able to handle 9 of 10 cars.

Wow Jim!
How many amps were you drawing? Very cool!
George
Didn't check the current, George - both engines use the 'contemporary' can motors, so they typically run about 1 amp each at full power. Believe it or not, both engines were slipping with 10 cars, with 9 I could get it moving with a push.
Such a nice looking train. New owner will use a Super 381 in the same colors (I color matched the orange and maroon color to one of his MILW state cars, which also match the engine.
Hopefully he has his eyes on a second Super 381! It will pull about 7 by itself.
Jim
Great, thanks Jim. The Super 381 looks great, as do the cars, especially the observation car.
The curves add a ton of friction and the train is so long. It may run better on an SGMA outer curve like at TrainFest given only a couple of cars will be on the curve at one time.
George
Jim, how long are the cars? I know Bob was considering bringing this set to run on the 16'x24' SGMA display in Eau Claire, WI this summer, and wonder if shorter than usual straight runs will be an issue.
Kirk
TOO AWESOME FOR WORDS ALONE!
I think the video answers my question. Chuck's SGMA display has 8' straight runs on the ends and 16' runs on the sides, so even ten cars should only be tracking two curves at any given time. I think that will work, even with only one Super 381!

Kirk - cars are 28" long. I could successfully run 9 of the ten cars on my 8 by 16 layout, so a 16 foot short length may make the difference. And a fresh oiling.Overall train length will be somewhere around 30 feet and about 100 pounds of heft.
Trying to contact Bob - need a phone number to ship, all ready to go.

Man those are huge! They look like 15" aluminum cars going around 027 track lol cept they are twice as big!!

Yeah - and these cars weigh about 10 pounds each. The roof, floor, ends and trucks are all aluminum castings. Sides are water jet cut sheet aluminum.

Jim,
All I can say is "WOW"!!! Really looking forward to the cars delivery this week.
I have two Super 381s: one in Milwaukee Road's 1948 tri-color livery and another in Milwaukee Road's 1952 version of the UP livery. If I want to stick to the 1948 tri-color paint scheme, along with my Milwaukee Road Super 381 I can run my tri-color "two-motor" MTH Milwaukee Road 381. I believe the Milwaukee Road 381 was the only 381 that MTH made with "two" motors installed. Does your green 381 have two motors? If not, maybe my 4-motor combination will pull all ten cars.
Bob
Jim,
I wonder if my all black Milwaukee Road BRUTE can pull all 10 cars?
Bob
Bob,
You can borrow my PRR GG2 (4-6-6-4) if none of your Milwaukee Road locos can handle it...

Bob, my super 381 green has two bild a loco motors, there is an idler truck in the center. I think 4 motors will pull the set if there is some straight track between the wider curves. I ran 9 cars with a Super and a regular 381, 3 motors. Was right on the edge of possible.
Cars should be to you tomorrow!

Jim,
You confirmed what I thought, i.e., your regular 381 has only 1 motor, whereas my Milwaukee Road regular 381 has 2.
As you said, 4 motors should pull the entire 10-car set so my 4-motor combo of a Milwaukee Road Super 381 and a Milwaukee Road regular 381 should be fine. In fact, maybe just one of my Milwaukee Road locomotives may be sufficient if there is enough straight track is between the curved track.
Hopefully, the third box of your Olympian Hiawatha cars will be delivered today as the FEDEX tracking number still indicates a Friday delivery even though 2 of the 3 boxes were unexpectedly delivered yesterday, Thursday. Keep your fingers crossed.
Bob
Bob,
Please post a movie when you get it up and running!

Craig,
OK, but you may need to wait for a SGMA event I attend this year, unless I setup all my modules into a layout in our barn. That would be a lot of work for my tired old body but to be honest, I have been thinking about doing just that for quite some time.
Bob
What could be better than a barn for housing a Standard Gauge layout? My train room is 26'x52', and is WAY too small. (David Carse has the right idea. His train room is four times larger than mine!)
Kirk
Interesting they went with 2 motors on a 381E. Did they put a can motor on each wheel set?
How did they do traction tires? You cannot put them on both wheel sets.
Williams made a 9E with 2 can motors. I heard it ran very well and a good puller.

The third box arrived today, Saturday, with the remaining six cars. Now I need a large SGMA layout to run all ten cars at once behind my Milwaukee Road Super 381 and 381 combo. Any suggestions?

The Williams motor had two can motors but only 4 drive wheels. The Super 381 is bigger and has two individual motors like a 402 or 408.

We are talking about the 'Super 381' here - was a display model in the Lionel showroom for years and is significantly bigger than the production 381.Has a bild a loco motor in each end and a truck in the middle that has some lateral motion to support the mid body.
