I recently purchased a set of Brass Long Island Railroad B-3 "Rats" Electric Locomotives made by 3rd Rail. These are super detailed and came with an older QSI sound system. The sounds are similar to Proto-1 sounds and sound great. I am a big fan of the high pitch whistle.
Here it is running on the Nassau Lionel Operating Engineers Club layout in Levittown NY. The coaches are Long Island Heavyweights by Lionel.

Ben, funny thing is Greg, Bruno and I had a conversation comparing the pluses and minuses of those companies on Wednesday at the club.  All we need is one company to get all three right.

Ben,

I have debating between the Lionel and Mikes versions for years. I always liked the paint scheme of the MTH but i liked that there were couplers on both ends on the Lionel version. I ended up with the 3rd Rail version because I came across it at a price that I couldn't pass up. In the end I like this version best because it's the one i have.

The Lionel version has the couplers on both ends but you need both units for the sound to work  My 3rd Rail version must need a new speaker because I get alot of static   The Mikes version is going for crazy prices lately for the Long Island   You can find a Pennsy one cheaper.   I love the Rats the best of any LIRR equipment  They used to switch the yard by my house near the car floats in Bay Ridge   Then those ugly New Haven Rectifiers would come in
