I haven't seen anything on this subject on this forum but there's a rumor doing the rounds that the next Vision Line offering will in fact be 21" passenger cars and they will feature interior detailing as good as if not better than that in the 3rd Rail GM Train of Tomorrow set. I had a small part in influencing Scott Mann's decisions about that set so I really sat up and took notice of this information.

Well, that and the fact that Lionel trailed in the Vol. 2 catalog the production of a set of prototypical UP excursion train cars in 2016 caught my interest. It would make sense to do those cars in a Vision Line offering not least because (a) you could expect there to be a substantial demand for them as there's no other 3rail O gauge version and (b) the present day interiors of the excursion cars are a lot easier to model than classic era cars. You can see what I mean at this UP site where all the cars and their floor plans are shown: https://www.up.com/aboutup/spe..._equipment/index.htm

Of course all this may be speculation but I thought I'd put it out there FYI.

I'll play-why else would Lionel 'sneak peak' this set?  Doesn't THAT seem unusual?

Plus, if you think about it, last year the VL BB, then aux water tenders, and now the Excursion train...

Plus, we'll have new FEFs...Just hope another Challenger isn't in the future.  I'll be broke.

I'm in no need of animated passenger cars-but, realistic sounds would interest me.  Opinion.

We'll know soon what the UP Excursion Train will be...I can't wait.

OK, I'll add what I think might be a realistic forecast:

Since Lionel has already announced that the 21" ABS cars won't have any "Little People" passenger figurines in them I can't see that animation is in our future. It's also a feature that I can live without.

But the excursion train has so many interesting cars that Lionel has not made up to now - the "flag" baggage car, the power car and the train end business car - that I imagine at least one of them will be made, whether or not this is indeed the next VL offering.

The other thing I expect we could see is cars apart from the diner that have sounds.

I hope you're wrong about that but I confess that price was my second thought after wondering how anyone can influence Lionel about what cars will be comprised in this set. On the Vol 2 catalog Notch 6 podcast I believe that Mike Reagan said that these cars will be prototypical instead of "generic" and that there would be the usual main set plus a couple of add-ons, including a Station Sounds diner. How about the main set being the flag baggage car, two domes and the business/end of train car?

THAT was my first thought-price.  With the words "Vision Line" there'll be an incredibly high price to pay.  I won't think twice about passing on them either.

Also, Hancock 52, someone posted in a thread an e-mail from Lionel the UP Excursion cars would be accurate to the prototype.

That's right, thanks. Can't find the thread now but the email was clear that in the future Lionel would distinguish in its catalogs between passenger cars that are prototypical and those that are not. Unfortunately it also recorded that the first run of 21" ABS cars will be in the latter category.

Older TMCC RS5 SS diners were speed sensitive. They had different sounds running than standing still. Legacy versions could add the sounds you mention. To me what differentiates Vision from Legacy is more animation. The Acela added many more animated features as well as many more headaches for most of its owners. Be careful what you wish for.

Me thinks Vision Line and ABS just don't go together.

My Amtrak Superliner station sound diner has prototypical generator sound. Very cool.  IMO, It is the only sound any RS dining car needs.

Yes... there are a lot of "SOLD OUT" banners in ads for the 4-car set, but not the 2-pack.  Seems odd that Lionel would botch the production volume of the main 4-pack.  It's usually the add-on cars that are short-shipped and then the wild games begin as enthusiasts try to complete their set.

Hopefully, once these cars are produced, production volumes will be such that folks who want a complete 6-car set will be able to purchase what they need.

Now you've all gone and done it. Gee whiz, thanks a lot.

I thought I blew my 2015 budget already.

OK, here are some Vision Line passenger set thoughts.

1) A UP Excursion set makes sense for lots of reasons

    a) Catalogue sneak peak

    b) Already two UP Vision Line large steamers released

    c) When the Big Boy #4014 makes its first run, I bet it will pull the Excursion train

    d) It would be a first and set a definite tone of exclusivity

2) It's hard to en"Vision" plastic cars at the prices suggested above. $499 MSRP for

    plastic? Oooooooo Nooooooo

3) If the cars are plastic, the detail would have to be state of the art starting with dead

on serious scale trucks. Interior detail would have to be outrageous. Lots of add on

     detail never before included.

4) new cars prototypical for the UP Excursion train a must

5) SOUND for several of the cars and not just the diner.

Mike, are you there? Mike? Mike, are you listening?

He's not answering.

My bad, I did not make up my mind on the engine until a few weeks ago. When I placed my order I wanted all of them. I received a phone call telling me the 4 cars were not available but the 2 car set was. They offered to refund my money if I did not want them because the 4 car set was not available. I told them I would think about it and get back to them.

Not sure what a I would do with the FEF in greyhound color - maybe pull freight cars or mic passenger cars. - Slightly disappointed.

To be clear, there are NO Lionel Vision Line passenger cars announced... at least not as of yet.  I suppose it's just folks tossing around the idea of, "What features would Vision Line passenger cars need in order to justify the Vision Line name... and of course the Vision Lionel cost?"

Jack, there aren't any of them yet and that's why the rumor that there might be, and that they will model the "prototypical" UP ACF-built excursion cars, is so intriguing. Of course it might turn out to be nothing at all. Someone said above, "Mike Reagan are you listening?" which is what I'd be interested to know.

The speculation on what "Vision Line" means in this particular context is also interesting. The VL Railsounds-equipped Ethanol tank cars were mainly plastic with metal detailing. They look and operate great and the sounds are more than entertaining. Surely Lionel can do the same with passenger cars.

I would not assume that accurate window placement or road-specific details will be unavailable. After all, the floor plans and interior details for these (and Pullman Standard) cars are readily available and Lionel has referred to making a line of "prototypical" 21" models.  That said, I appreciate that most O gauge passenger cars are no more than a representation of the prototypes and those who merely want something like that can have it from both Lionel and MTH.

Great. So a joke and no answer. Thanks!

Lionel's 2015 V2 which is the latest one just issued.

By what I have seen in the catalog and only next to the black 844 FEF is a circle saying, "Includes special Lionel Lines tender magnet to recreate the 2010 LCCA Excursion"

I feel that Lionel will be making the 2010 LCCA Denver Convention Excursion train with the new 21" cars. And that these cars may have many added features to recreate these passenger cars.
