When I first heard of the coal depletion feature, it hit me as being gimmicky but now that the loco is out and running I would like some discussion on this particular feature of the VL Big Boy.
I like it. While I don't notice it depleting, I do think it's fun to look at it and realize that it's time for a refill. Gimmicky yes, fun yes. But that whistle...
It will be much cheaper to represent an "oil depletion feature" on the next round of
BB models that portray the 4014 (?) that is being converted to burn oil for excursion
service.
I fact, I think that the Lionel models of the oil-burning UP Challengers already have this oil-depletion feature, but who can tell? Those tender dip-sticks are really small in 1:48.
