Good morning, railroad friends

I am just finishing up some scratch models of this car. I have Googled myself to death trying to see the "fine Print" to make the decals for this car, and cannot find a photo online with good enough resolution.

I need the "capacity", dimensions and build date.

Any ideas? Many thanks!

Alan,

There was an article in OST on building the pickle tank "tub" cars quite a few years ago.

You might 1st pull up the indices of that publication and extract that article - it's quite good.  I built 2 cars -  one of each gallon capacity.

If you are more than passingly interested in this topic, request from the NMRA library copies of the SIG newsletters on the topic of every pickle industry related. "Pickles in Miniature"

In those newsletters you will find all of the information regarding roster names and numbers, sizes of tubs (2 different gallon sizes...), dates of use and most importantly --> the plans for these cars and the coffin cars and the vinegar tank cars.

Good!  That original article on the tub cars was by Tom Houle, too.  Good stuff and well detailed on the "How to".

I picked up a lot of this information back when I did that scratchbuilt vinegar car article for OST.

Surprised me that the NMRA had a SIG on this topic, albeit inactive.  But the information remains in their library

Wow...I am in the process of kitbashing a Lionel tub car into one of these cars, and did not remember (or see) this posting.  There were two different HO kits for these offered, and I had thought I might pick one up to get a look at the lettering on the decals, if forced to.  Did you come up with better photos/more info on these cars?   Interesting that this was a GATX car, and not a company car.  What was your interest in Von Allmen, alan?

From a posting on Steam Era Freight Cars - sorry about yahoo's masked email but the gentleman's name is here and it comes recommended by lots of good folks:

To all – I just received my copy of Pickle and Vinegar Makers of the Midwest by David Leider.  It not only gives the history of the companies and description of the processes but also more car photos and plans than I ever imagined existed.  Truly a labor of love.  He doesn’t appear to have a web site but his email is sooauthor@... 140 pages on quality stock, 190 photos, 31 maps and 68 drawings and illustrations for $32.95 plus $4.95 shipping.  Highly recommended. – Al Westerfield

Alan, if you make those decals, I'd like to buy a set, and....did you establish what color(s) were on the Von Allmen vat cars?  The car is on Bettendorf trucks, which makes me think these were running into the 1900's,   I wonder how late they WERE used?

Squire Dingee had 7 as late as 1960 and Soo Line had one as late as 1955.
