In my quest to gather some Waddell Coal Mining Company 2-bay hoppers, I find that they are considerably more expensive than other road name 2-bay hoppers. There is no supply shortage of o-gauge Waddell hoppers as several manufacturers made them. Why do they cost more?

My goal is to mimic a NYO&W coal train with some Waddell hoppers behind a Camelback. However I read somewhere that the actual number of Waddell hoppers was too small for a coal train consist, so what other railroad hoppers would the NYO&W have in a train?

Did the NYO&W really go down into West Virginia to service the Waddell Coal Mining Company?

Bobby:

The closest the NYO&W got to West Virginia was Scranton, PA.  In other words; not even close.

As to what other hoppers the O&W might have in a train; why, their own, of course.  The O&W served part of the anthracite region in northeastern PA and would have had their own fleet of coal hoppers.

Edit:  And now; thanks to the interest fueled by this thread and an impulsive “gotta have one” moment; a new Waddell Coal hopper will be arriving this week.

Bobby; I don’t know whether to thank you or curse you.  😉

The O&W had Waddell hoppers #101-#105. They carried a lot of D&H coal due to lease agreements, so I would include their hoppers, and in later years bought a large number of hoppers from Westmoreland and Pennsy if I remember right. There is a book called "Hard Coal & Coal Cars" that is an excellent read for the O&W coal hopper fleet.

Thanks all for your replies. I have accumulated 3 MTH Premier 20-97200 Waddell Hoppers, so I need one more. Hopefully I can get one for less than ludicrous bucks.

Chris,

Your link to the O&W Historical Society led me to their new book, Walton & The Delhi Branch On The O&W. I have often seen remnants of the Delhi Branch right of way, so this book is on my list of buys.

Reviving an old thread here. The Waddell operation always peaked my interest as I saw what was left of that breaker just before it was scrapped in 2003 and that is where we rescued our mine locomotive from! From what I understand these orange hoppers were never used in mainline hauling of anthracite. Waddell has “coal pockets” in Scranton where they would spot these orange hoppers directly over the chutes and load the delivery trucks from. The hopper itself was the billboard advertising the coal! They would be filled at the breaker in Winton and some mines in Carbondale then ran back and forth between there. There’s a great pic in the book “Trackside around Scranton” of the pockets. Anyways I just picked up 6 of the MTH premier hoppers, they sure are nice!
