In looking at several of the handsome early scale Berks, I notice that the descriptions vary slightly in the catalogs from the 2003 Vol 1 and 2003 Vol 2.  The Vol 2 models state "Dual Fat Boy speakers and improved smoke output systems." Does that imply that the Vol 1 models only have 1 speaker or that they have two but are not 'Fat Boys' and have 'lesser' smoke units?

I'm at our train show in Asheville and picked up No 6-38050 #779 Nickel Plate Rd from Vol2 and am curious about it.

Didn't realize that they produced so many different models back then.  Any info is greatly appreciated.

As an interesting sidenote, I noticed that No 6-11208 #1225 shows up as a Legacy model from 2010 and listed for just $979.   Is that a typo as all the other models listed for $1099 and up?

Not a typo on the Pm 1225. So the 1225 in 2010 came as just the loco. If you want the tender, you had two choices which was Pere Marquette or Polar Express. Both tenders were 400-500 each.

The dual fat boys should be in the Tender they were small speakers from the ones I’ve seen that have been taken apart.

The first NKP has one large fat boy speaker.  The last reissue has two smaller fat boy speakers.   The original NKP has a upgraded TMCC chuffing smoke unit that was better then all previous smokers but does not smoke at idle.. All steamers produced after the scale Hudson in 2008 has the newest version .

Surely some of youse guys are very knowledgeable about these early scale Berks?

I guess you could say I'm knowledgeable about the 2003 Berks.

The first run Berks -- 6-38050 Nickel Plate, 6-38051 Erie and 6-38052 Pere Marquette -- were produced at the same time, and have identical operating features. The main exception is the operating Mars light on the NKP.

All models have synchronized, fan-driven smoke, and two Fat Boy speakers in the tender. The description found in the 2003 Volume 2 catalog should be accurate for what was produced.

What Tim said.  The 2003 berks with Odyssey 1 should be reliable, but slow-speed performance will be a notch below that of an MTH loco with PS2 or PS3.  IMO, the 11203 (released in 2010) and the slightly later 11454 are going to run better.  Some worthwhile improvements over the 2003 models are Legacy and back-drivable gears.  The 2010 model has a Buehler motor with dual flywheels (which was generally reserved for Vision line models.)  But with back-drivable gears, the extra flywheel isn't as important.  Of course they were reissued again as build-to-order with an 81000-series product number.  Performance-wise I would expect that one to be equivalent to the 11454.   My $.02.

Do you know if the Pere Marquette 1225 from 2003 has the same whistle as the 2010?
