A major decision on my 7' square carpet RR construction. Extremely limited on what I can do because I am in my son's house and he is obsessive compulsive about HIS house. I have green indoor/outdoor carpeting on top of his new carpeting that helps make the track firmer. The Standard gauge is still heavy enough to flex the track. I have been looking at wood, mostly thin plywood in strips about 9" wide. Cutting it would be a problem unless HomeDepot would cut it in strips for me. He goes to Florida for a medical procedure so that will be the time to do it. He dislikes sawdust. Brought a few O gauge steam engines out of storage and have been running them. Amazing how much enjoyment there is in a little layout like I have. Be grateful for what you have in life, not envious of others.
There was the one curved turnout on the layout which is an HO scale, and the ties always bugged me. They really stuck out from the On30 turnouts. So, it's not exactly a James Bond quality disguise, but I covered the turnout with a lot of cinders and it doesn't look quite so obvious for the ties as it used to.

Jim;
All of the Home Depot's I've visited in NE Pennsylvania have these giant panel cutters which make short work of 4x8 sheets of plywood (and homasote). I believe the first cut or two is free and then the charge fifty cents per additional cut. When I was beginning my basement layout, I needed close to 15 sheets of plywood and 15 sheets of homasote cut, and they were very helpful and never charged me for all the additional cuts. They even helped load all the cut lumber into mt Subaru. I'd check out your local HD.
This morning I checked on the section of brick road I glued down yesterday. That's all set . Now I am just waiting for my sidewalks to arrive so I can paint them and start gluing them down. A couple of weeks ago a guy from my local small club called me to say he was helping his son take out a shower in his basement and asked if I wanted some 2X4's. He dropped off a pile under my car port. So now I am heading out there to cut them up into table legs. {ic of end of road.................Paul
I saw they had one of the big cutting units at HD but they don't know what Homosote is. I will check Lowe's because I like Homosote. I cut some boards for book shelves and got sawdust on my son's like new BMW cycle and he had a fit. He has impaired sense of balance from his stroke and the BMW sits there.

Jim;
I know what you mean about the homosote... luckily, I looked online before I went and found it was stored with the insulation products, not the plywood sheets (online often lists the aisle and bay things are stored in). And you DEFINITELY don't want to cut homosote indoors!!!
Hope you can find what you need.
I will look at the insulation section but don't think they have it. On my old layout I cut the Homosote outside and salvaged the "sawdust", which was a gray fluff and made some nice fake trees out of some of it. Here I wasn't allowed to sweep sawdust in to the grass. I asked Junior why he used mulch then but he had no answer to that.

Jim,
I have not found Homasote locally in Home Depot or Lowes. What I have left over was bought ages ago, and I hope I still have enough for my new layout because I like it. I don't know where to get it now in Butler or Allegheny Counties.
Mark- try Home Depot in Cranberry. I think that is where I bought it 4-5 yrs ago.

Jim,
Thank you!!
We did some soldering on the relays prepping them for installation on the four new turnouts on the Cabin Lake Subdivision.

Go for the Homoboard 440 ... it's homosote but moisture resistant, with a nicer surface finish.
Kerrigan,
This is the first I have heard of Homaboard 440. I will look for it if I run out of Homasote.
Pretty much finished with the mountain scene on the layout. Will give thought to the transition at the bottom of the ice fall. The mountain needs to be removable, so it just isn’t right at the point where the ice meets the rocks in the stream. Oh well, I’ll just sit and stare at it awhile. Something will pop up. Some pics and bad video...

Mark;
According to HD's website, Jim is correct - the Cranberry store carries homasote in aisle 19:
Paul,
Thany you for looking it up!! I didn't doubt Jim for a minute!
Now when the time comes I will have to get up the courage to drive into Cranberry!! It has become another world to this bumpkin!! LOL

well done, not even noticable unless you said something abut it!

Randy, I see Butler HD has sound barrier 440. I will have to to a look see. I missed it having never heard the name, many thanks!!
Lee, nice job on the switch. TEDW, well done on the mountain scene................Paul
Thx to all for the likes and comments. Lee, I like your touch up on the switch, but it looked great before, imo. I do realize when a particular element “just isn’t right”, however. Paul, just trying to keep up with the Joneses. TW
Ted- the falls look great. Almost going to be a shame to hide them below the Christmas tree.
Lee- nothing the casual observer would have noticed but I can understand how it bugged you.

I use it because it doesn't swell or separate when misted or painted. More expensive but I like the finish better than on regular Homosote.

Yes, that sounds like it would be perfect for us! Thank you for another happy user endorsement!

Thanks, everyone. The difference in ties annoyed me every since I put down the ballast originally. I tired putting grass over it all but it looked too odd, so I removed it all before the glue dried. The cinders are a but odd in that they start abruptly at one point (right before the moving portions of the points start) then fade out going away from the turnout. Looks like a car spilled something, I guess. The 10-wheelers bounce a little bit going over it, so there's still some grit I need to pick out. The Whitcomb 50-tonner goes over it with ease, though. But it's a small area, so I'll be running a dental tool over the flangeways and insides of the rails to make sure the flanges go through easier than they are.
Oops is right Matt!! Very nice trains!! Thank you for posting!!

I would classify that as "equipment malfunction"..
I did some work on my portable layout.
This is my portable layout it is four scales O S HO & N and it is all scale with sometimes whimsical detail. I tried to do a force perspective on the layout and it did come out pretty well. It is all run on DCS or DCC Via WiFi and I am quite happy with how it works.
The following photos are of some of the detail....
It is totally portable and fights into the bed of my pickup. The Pickup and a full tonneau cover on it and the table has wheels on the bottom when legs are folded up it rolls right in.
Dan, That layout is really neat! I'll bet it is a hit at shows!
