I think they plug into a QSI reverse unit and provide diesel sounds. Conventional control only. QSIndustries in Beaverton, Oregon, introduced electronic reverse units for AC locomotives around 1982 (ACRU). Then came reverse units for can motors (DCRU), followed by a variety of sound circuit boards. MTH adapted this system and called it "Proto-Sound." After PS-2 was introduced, this older system was called "PS-1." "PS-1" was not printed on boxes.
