I've got one of the new Southern Pacific Legacy crane cars.  I want to have some good "loads" to pick and move with the crane when visitors come over to see my layout.   I'm thinking about bundles of scale lumber (or railroad ties?)  that can be moved from the side of the roadbed onto a flat car, and back.   So what do other folks do in the way of loads to get top play value from the crane car?  Pictures would be great to help stimulate some ideas.

And are there any techniques to avoid having to manually intervene to "hook" the load onto the crane hook, and then manually "unhook" after the load is moved?

You can crush and cube aluminum foil, and band it with very fine twist ties. Get some chain link fence post caps or top rail ends, (they are aluminum), drill some holes in the sides, and put a wire loop through. Get some metal shavings from a band saw or other source, and fill the caps almost to the top and then put the shavings in as a scrap load. Wood crates with gook eyes on the four corners can be used, or straps can be wrapped from underneath to form a sling. Years ago, when I was making MOW loads for Weaver, I made a jig using a piece of plastic 1/2" plastic sheathing, with paneling nails spaced driven through from the bottom, just enough to leave a score mark on a piece of wood to make board lines. This saves a lot of time cutting and gluing individual boards.

When the nieces and nephews come over, we setup the Legacy cranes and remotes (we have a couple) and scatter some wheel sets in a couple of areas.  The kids then get their cranes into position and have to pickup the wheel sets and place them on the wheel set flat cars, in the slots...of course they are timed how long it takes to accomplish and the winner gets to choose from a bag of wrapped dollar store prizes.  Quite cheesy, but they love playing.  They start asking "when are going we going to play the crane game?" As soon as they walkin the door.
