Have you contacted Sunset directly?  I had gotten actual touch up paint from them directly in the past.  If that doesn't pan out then try the recommended Scale Coat as well as Badger Model Flex.  If it changes the gloss level then you can top it with a mix of 50/50 flat and semi-gloss of Testor's clear lacquer.  I have found this to be the perfect match for 3rd Rail engines from that time frame.

the floguil I'd bought for my BLI Q2 Ho.. got rid of that do to gone threw 4 with bad smoke units and electrical shorts..If I got to pay 500 for a train I'll go scale..So I went over to scale and my first scale is my 3rd rail PRR S2 turbine.. it matches that, but for some reason it didnt dry wright??..My S1 Duplex is a hair on the greener side and more flater finnish, but I rub that out to get a semi gloss..Now that time Id stuck the shell in the oven at 200 degree foe 20 mins.. dryedalot better...for some cant tell its alittle off, but I can because Im a autobody painter for 30+ yearsand got the eyes for color matching...The scale coat,is that enamel or lacqure finish? If it didnt say pennsylvania on the tender I couldve takened it to my local dupont store to do a computer color match.

well on area clear or some sort of it peeled or weathering.. can scrape it with my fingernail..so i took a rag and used alittle lacqure thinner.. took that stuff off and 6100 and pennsylvania came off too.. oh well.but its back to semi gloss finish. and can see better to try to match it..I did take it to my loco dupont store and they coma visioned it/computer matched it..looks super close too.. might think on repaint the whole train? then have somebody restencial the 6100 and pennsylvania back on it..will post pics if you want to see it...I won this on web aucton and it was damaged..this is number 37 out of 75 made..

Contact Sunset about the lettering.  Most people don't know that they achieve that flawless lettering from special decals that don't have the clear film.  There is an overlay to hold everything in place until they set.  I don't know if that is what was used back on your models, but I know that was the method as far back as the B&O EM-1 for sure.

I am with you on the color matching.  One of the areas I oversee is our press room so color matching is a must so I too am bothered if it isn't perfect.

Good luck!

Great news!!!  Me and the wife got off work early tonight.. going to have us work 1/2 a shift because of low orders..I work in a turkey prossing plant. Its slow for my line of work do to the economie..so I got a job for time being at that plant..Ok I went to my dads place to repaint/touchup my train tonight.. The match is close to great!! Im heck of alot happier with it.. Used NASON base coat and shot PPG clear and used/sprayed a light coat of krylon semi gloss clear to kill the supper gloss..I'll tell tomarrow when I take the train out side to see how it realy matched.. from in side with lights its good.Getting a hold of Sunset is a challenge..I'll try to post pics of my train.. got to touchup the tender..

I just looked at the listing for the S-1.  Excellent condition?  REALLY???????

i just received a letter from these guys and they claim to be experts on model trains.  I guess they must have dropped it at some point between writing the description and taking the photos.  At least you seem to be on the road to recovery.  Please post photos upon completion.

yes experts alright... saying and listing it this as a S1 turbine...lol...I knew it was damaged from the pics before the auction..I know how to do the body repairs and thought I could pick is up cheap?..I did but the first bid on it at 300..but i went on live and got out bidded till the end I won it.. these are hard to find.. lional and mth didnt put out alot neighter.. this was 37 out of 75 that 3rd rail made..  But there was more internal damages that they didnt claim..wonder why this didnt have a box??  make a bet that it was damaged during shipping to them or they accidently damaged it in there ware house?..top it off they charged me 9% of buyer fee and 35.00 shipping by ups..so it totaled out to 552.00...I know i'd got hosed alittle bit..the front end and rear cab damage is fixed and painted..My friend that works at my local dupont store did a croma vision on it..it a camara that you place on top of the painted surface.. it takes a pics of that and come up with a paint mixing formula..well it matched it to the T!!! Took the train in and they couldnt believe it looked great, couldnt tell where I'd blended the the paint and clear..got to finish the tender and hope sunset gets back to me about replacement parts and letter stencial for it..mario  thanks for the info...the pics above is after the repair and paint work was done..
