Well, my 15 year old CAB-1 became nonresponsive again; as I was tired of dealing with it, and my young son wanted to run trains, I went out and bought a CAB-1L and base.   My Cab-1 was never abused (except when my son broke the antenna), or even used that much, but it just seemed to wear out- some buttons wouldn't work consistently and the battery tabs were not reliably holding the batteries in place.

99% of time, I run TMCC engines from the Postwar Celebration Series.  The other 1% is conventional.  I don't anticipate ever buying Legacy engines, so I didn't buy the Cab-2.  I am pleased that the Cab-1L seems to be more responsive than the Cab-1, and the trains seem to run slightly better.

So, what can be done with a broken Cab-1?  Is it cost effective to fix?  Are there any people that actually repair old Cab-1s?

Is this just dinosaur technology that I should just give up on?  The command base seems to work fine; it seems to be a waste of equipment to just give up on this system, but I can't think of how I would use it.

Any thoughts appreciated, thanks.

I would open it up and clean the contacts under the rubber buttons. I use a pencil eraser and clean them, especially the whistle button which gets more usage than most other buttons.

Simple to open with 6 screws. As for the battery tabs, just bend them outward to secure the batteries better.

In my opinion, the cab-1 has been around for 20 years and still works every time I use them. The cab-2 can be flaky at times but rarely is. Still think the cab-1 is a robust remote that can take a beating and still work regardless of dinosaur components inside.

Keep it as a backup. The cab 1L is a good unit to use as well.
