I subscribe to OGR and CTT.  Even though I like scale stuff, I have never met a toy train I didn't like, so I feel that both mags complement each other nicely.

I will occasionally pick up MR, Trains or Classic Trains if there are articles or subjects in them that interest me.

I also get the club mags, and I really enjoy the TCA quarterly, as I am interested in the history of toy trains as well.

CTT and OGR. It's worth noting that CTT has put an emphasis on "how to" articles in the last couple of years....and OGR has presented more historical information recently. So they are both very useful and informative publications. I am a member of TCA and LCCA, they both have benefits. Please don't get into a debate over the "best magazine" or the "best club" or the "best toy train manufacturer". They ALL have their strengths and weaknesses! Buy and enjoy what you like and allow the other person the courtesy of enjoying what they like without criticism or thinking that you "know" what they "should" like. Enjoy the hobby!!!

I generate plenty of business for the local shop!

I still subscribe to OGR. OGR does a far superior job of maintaining the interest of their readers and online forum members than does CTT. That is precisely why I let my membership lapse of CTT.  I am an active member of the  Train Collectors Association and I get a quarterly issue of their magazine.

OGR & CTT. I prefer OGR as CTT has too many articles on postwar and conventional stuff for me (not one of my interests) although I do read most of their articles about it.

If my LHS has any old unsold copies of magazines left over, they will give me the old copies. From those, I have recently been enjoying Garden Railways and Trains. Garden Railways seems to have a lot of electronics how-to articles that I find interesting (mostly DCC but still interesting) and you can't beat reading about the real thing!

Those two may be added to the subscription list someday.

Here's my rundown:

  • Subscribe to OGR, Digital Edition. It allows me quick reference to material on my laptop.
  • Occasionally pick up Model Railroader when there's an article of interest, though I may buy their historical archive set since the early years were O scale focused.
  • Less Occasionally pick up Model Rail. UK Publication Has great modeling. Focus tends to center around OO, H.O. and some N Scale with the occasional O Scale article. The Brits have taken small space layouts to a high art form. If it was available via digital subscription I'd probably subscribe.
  • Rarely buy CTT.

Okay, the usual OGR and CTT.  I spend more time reading OGR because it is more aligned with my interests.  Add an occasional O Scale Trains.  Lastly, Model Railroad Hobbyist which is a free downloadable magazine -- mainly HO and N but good articles on model building and scenery.

I currently don't have any subscriptions.  A couple of reasons, 1) if I want to see photos of layouts, I can do that on the internet, 2) my interest has migrated to scale trains and often there are not many articles about scale model trains.

I do try to stop by the bookstore at least monthly and take a quick look at the different magazines.  My favorite articles are the "how-to" articles and if I see a how-to that interests me, I will buy the magazine!

I subscribed to Model Railroader from 2001-2005.  Once or twice a year lately, I've picked up the issue of the month, plus the special offer (from Wal-Mart, of all places ).  When my high school dumped a lot of their old archived magazines, I was fortunate enough to pick up every MR issue they had before the date I subscribed.  Good thing I had a tuba locker!!!

I'm kind of ashamed to say that I only have two issues of Classic Toy Trains and only one issue of O Gauge Railroading.  Nevertheless, I read through them quite often.  I would love to subscribe to either one, but I have no idea where I would put them.  There is a lot of material in MR that I find can be transferrable to O gauge trains, and, believe it or not, I even take ideas from CTT and OGR and ponder ways to apply it to HO scale.

I have noticed that I tend to spend a lot more money on railroad literature (books, DVDs, etc.) and much less on the actual models and other layout materials.  I would like to reverse that trend.

This has been asked before, too....:  Narrow Gauge and Short Line Gazette, OGR, and,

less and less interesting CTT, who I think is too constrained by its title.   I used to subscribe to RMC, and belong to 3 clubs...now just TCA.  I did pick up one O scale

magazine, but am not sure it is still published.  I do pick up another one, but it is not found locally so that is just occasionally.
