Wheelset Gauge

What is the recommended back to back gauge for MTH wheel sets? I'm a newby to 3 rail O scale. I have a 5 x 7 ft MTH Realtrax oval with a passing siding. When backing my train through the left hand turnout, the gondola from the set frequently derails on the switch. The tender truck closest to the engine and the rear drivers on the engine (4-6-0 with protosound 3.0 and a wireless drawbar) also derail when backing through the switch. The switch is a current run MTH O-31left hand. I have been told that MTH had some guard rail problems with these switches, early on, but that the problem was cured years ago. All I can figure is the wheels are out of gauge, thus my question. Any ideas?
