I have been thinking about how to force some perspective on a smaller layout in regards to the illusion of trains being gone longer than they are.  Basically having trains fully enter a tunnel, power down for a period, the power back up and leave the tunnel giving the perception that the train has been gone longer than it has.

So my question is as follows:

With DCS if I have a train which moves into a tunnel, then I set up switch to cut power to that section of track, and after a period of time add power back to that track, what does the train do?

Keep in mind the DCS system will never be shut down or altered during this period, just this section of track.

When in DCC on my HO layout, the train would start back immediately how it stopped as the signal stored in the on board chip and coming from the DCC system had not changed.  Does this work the same in DCS?

If it does not, what are suggestions on how I could accomplish this?

That won't work under DCS. However, you could do what you desire by using the Record/Playback process:

  • Press Startup and drive the train to where you want it to be when it starts running its loop
  • Stop the train by reducing speed to zero. Do not change direction.
  • Press Menu/Advanced/Record Playback and soft key REC. An "(R)" will appear in the DCS Remote's window
  • Press Startup again and drive the train into the tunnel
  • Reduce speed to zero
  • Wait as long as you want the train to be in the tunnel
  • Increase speed to what it previously was
  • Drive the train back to its initial starting point, reducing speed to zero so that it stops as close to it's initial starting point as possible
  • Press Menu and soft key STP
  • Press soft key SAV and select a Session# to which to save the session
  • Press the thumbwheel to save it.

To playback the session:

  • Position the train at its starting point
  • Press Menu/Advanced/Record-Playback and soft key PLY to play the recording once or soft key LOP to loop the recording until you manually stop it. A "(P)" will appear in the DCS Remote's window
  • Select the Session # you saved the recording in previously.
The recorded session will play back once or indefinitely, depending on whether you selected PLY or LOP. Regardless, to stop playback at any time, Press:
Menu/Advanced/Record Playback and soft key STP.

This and a whole lot more is all in "The DCS O Gauge Companion 2nd Edition", now available for purchase as an eBook or a printed book from MTH's web store site! Click on the link below to go to MTH's web page for the book!

That's awesome Barry, thanks.  Much easier in the end than what I would have done with DCC.

I will be purchasing the book this week as my DCS system is on it's way.  I mainly wanted to answer a question for myself when thinking about the design of my layout before I got too far with ideas.

It is theoretically possible to have track voltage be dropped to a point where motor can't run but PS2 will think power is still on.  This would be hard on the motor, probably causing it to overheat when stalled.  This theoretically could be overcome by placing a relay between PS2 board and motor, set to drop out at, say, 10 volts & pull in when full voltage is restored.  The coil would have to be fed track voltage, not voltage from the motor circuit.

This is all theoretical, a possible idea for someone wants to play with the system.  I have used such relays many decades ago, to pull in a SPDT relay when 20 volts applied to track, to trigger an e-unit while disconnecting the motor to avoid a lurch.
