I heard January 2017 or just after when I asked at York.

Think about it...  A January 2017 ship-date  would imply the product was already manufactured just around October's York dates.  I really hope that Lionel realizes we've figured out this typical 3-month window from the date-of-manufacture stamped on the shipping box to the time the product reaches our hands.  There's nothing secret about this time lag.

So when Lionel quotes a close-in date like that, they should know DEFINITIVELY that the product has already been manufactured... and we should see the product on the shipping schedule.  If that's not the case, then they have no business quoting dates like that -- unless they want to give us the impression they don't have a clue what's going on.

Given we're now wrapping up 2016... and neither of these passenger sets is listed on the shipping schedule yet, I'm thinking a mid-2017 delivery (possibly Spring 2017 at the earliest) is more likely.  If they arrive sooner, so be it.  But I wouldn't hold my breath.

Lionel's 12/15 update of the shipping schedule has a bunch of stuff with August 2017 dates... but no sign of the 21" passenger cars listed yet.  So what does that tell ya?

C Ro has changed the date from 12/10/16 to 8/2017 0n all the 21" cars about a week or two ago.

I'd take that as the last update Ro and other big dealers have had on the expected shipping date. Coupled with the fact that there are tool samples of the other non-generic (generic = ESE-based) Broadway Limited cars, I'm encouraged that it appears Lionel still intends to manufacture the UP Excursion Cars. I've had serious doubts over whether they would.

Actually this delay is similar to other ones Lionel has had where there were manufacturing issues. Or maybe I'm just wearing rose-tinted glasses.

I'll chime in here and shed a little light on the mystery...  We received our first tooling samples of the new cars for the UP, PRR, PC, AFT, and CSX sets just a short while ago. We're in the process of giving final comments on these samples back to the factory so that they can proceed to deco samples and then quickly on to production. With 17 new bodies to design and tool for these orders, tooling took a bit longer than either we or the factory would have liked, and the review process is taking a little longer as well, but I think when you see the samples and the final product you'll agree they are worth the extra wait! I hope to post some photos here next week to give you a good look (better than the Broadway flying past in a blur behind new G's at least!)

Why aren't they on the schedule yet? Once we have cleared the samples for production, then we can set a production schedule and have a reasonable date to give you all. Until then, my most educated guess is that you will probably see these in Spring 2017. The Chinese New Year holiday and the factory's production schedule make pinning down a hard date just a little too difficult right now.  We will likely ship these in at least two shipments, with the StationSounds diners following close behind the regular cars. Production numbers might demand a third shipment as well.  Once they start coming, they'll come quickly.

I think you'll be very happy with these cars, especially the lowered ride height, and we all look forward to getting these to you soon.  And oh yes, there will be some more good 21" surprises to come in the next catalog!

Thanks Ryan:

I was waiting for you to announce the lower ride height and did not want to steel your opportunity to make the announcement. You and I spoke about this subject at Trainfest and if I may, you suggested there might be an option for lowering the past 21 inch models with the purchase of a new truck kit. Is this “lowering” option still something we will be seeing?

Thanks Ryan.

Charlie

Charlie,

We have ordered additional trucks and couplers for service and these will be available for purchase for those who would like to lower their cars. Of course lowering the trucks also means raising the couplers. It's not a hard project the way these are built. The trucks will ship with the new cars and the team in service will have them on the website as soon as possible thereafter.

Matt,

We are doing some design revisions on the NW2 drive right now. I expect those to be done in the start of the new year. After that it's on to tooling. I suspect these will deliver in the second half of 2017 - but that's as close to a target as I can give at this time with so many steps to go. We'll have our first production schedule from most of the factories in early January and then we'll have more information to give on many of the 2017 projects.

David,

Always happy to help empty a modeler's wallet. Thank you for the suggestion! As with all future product plans there is very little I can say here and now, but the suggestion is on the list and it could happen down the tracks somewhere.

Thank you very much for the update.  I'm really counting on that chessie steam special passenger set in the 17 catalog.  Merry christmas thanks again

Ryan, Thanks for the update!! That is a huge help to better understand the realities of the process you and our trains go through. Quick updates like that keep us all very happy!!  I am looking forward to the UP set so take your time to make it great. Your updates should also help move the arm chair manufacturers/titans of industry on here to other more productive activities.

Thanks!!

Any update on the UP Excursion set?  I mean, are they being whittled out of bamboo in the Far East or what...??

The latest word I know of came at the end of March when there was a thread in which Lionel explained that there are tooling problems with the next issue of 21" cars. This was in the context of someone noticing that the shipping schedule had not been updated. This is what Dave Olson of Lionel said:

"We have run into a tooling issue with the 21" passenger cars that we're diligently working on every day. We have 17 new passenger cars that were cataloged last year and two new this year. That adds up to a lot of tooling, a lot of testing, inspection, etc. We should have a more set-in-stone date for these come York, so please ask when you see us there."

I wasn't at York and don't recall anyone reporting back that Lionel had any additional info.

You'll notice that Lionel has not released any pictures of pre-production samples of the Excursion cars (unlike other products announced long afterwards, like the theater car). I think that reflects tooling as the underlying problem.

Charles Ro's website, which is usually very accurate about the latest on Lionel shipping dates, shows expected availability 08/10/2017.

I took pictures of the pre-production cars at York. They look really good.  i asked Ryan about when they will be coming out, and he replied no date has been set, however if he had an estimate it, he said probably in the fall.  My reply was "No worries. I rather see them made correctly"....

So I would hang on to your wallets and hats....

.  .  . any chance we could get a pic or two of the ones you took at York?  I'd love to see the pre-prod examples!!!  Thanks in advance

Same from me - I did not know that Lionel had shown any samples at York. A while back Ryan K. said that they planned to release photos on their Facebook page but nothing's appeared there except for the Theater car and some other intriguing things like the Daylight AC-9.

Not the best pictures.  But the cars look great.

Photos are great, thanks very much for posting.

It looks like the UP Excursion Car samples shown above are (top to bottom) baggage, diner (possibly - I'm a little stumped by the window placement) and power car. Only the middle car appears to have the prototypical ACF roof detail (many rivets!) but these are not the final versions.

It's also obvious that these cars do not ride as high over the trucks as the first issue of the 21" ABS cars.

Does anyone have any further info on the expected shipping time of the UP Excursion Car sets? They are still not in the Lionel Shipping Schedule although Ro's website shows expected availability 8/10/17. But it's had that annotation for a while and might be inaccurate.

Somebody quipped above about these cars being whittled out of bamboo. I'm beginning to wonder if that may be right.
