After doing a number of Cruise Commander installations, it's time for my first Cruise Commander lite. It will go into a 1948 American Flyer S gauge 4-8-4. This will have a can motor conversion.

The forum recommends installing a PTC in series with the motor to protect the board in case the motor stalls.

What is the correct value of the PTC? Where can it be obtained - Digi-Key, Mouser?

Searching the forum did not turn up the answers.

These are the ones that Gunrunner recommended a while back.  They are 0.75 amp hold, 1.5 amp trip.  I've used them in a few installations.  I do see  that they are now discontinued at Digi-Key.

They are installed directly on one of the motor leads.  A modern can motor will draw less than one amp when running, even working hard.

The 3A hold and 6A trip are WAY too big for the CC-Lite!  Bob has the ones I use, but any similar rated ones will do the trick.  You don't want more than about a 1.5A trip, remember they take a while to trip at the trip current.  4A is probably a generous rating for the CC-Lite, I had one of the beta units go up in smoke a few years ago when the engine stalled on a switch.  It only took a few seconds!  When I measured the stall current with the motors stalled, it was only 3.6 amps, but that was apparently enough to kill the CC-Lite.  Since I've used the PTC, I haven't ever lost one since.

I did take one of my conversions and load it down until I could get the PTC to open, worked like a champ.  The locomotive stopped and in about 15 seconds I was able to run again like nothing happened.
