All steam owning forumites, from you personal experience which model (and manufacturer's) steam engine consistently been your best smoker right out of the box with no modifications needed? My 3 year-old nephew is in awe of smoking locomotives every time he sees one. Since he enjoys them so much I want to get the best one  to run for him when he comes over. Whether it's conventional or digital is not as issue -- just so it's smoke output is totally awesome.

Please popst your recommendations based either on what's in your own collection or those engines belonging to others which have left you spellbound and speechless.

I agree that MTH has the best smoke generator BUT Lionel does a fine job too of matching it. My Legacy E6 with whistle steam can easily match the output of my MTH railking steam locomotive.

Whatever manufacturer you choose to buy a steam locomotive from you won't be disappointed because both companies make excellent products.

Have fun!

MTH smoke units will put out more smoke than almost anyone wants. Lionel units were pretty anemic until Railsounds 5 came along. My Lionel Hiawatha Atlantic with RS5 was the first Lionel engine I saw with respectable smoke output. Legacy engines in general have smoke output that is competitive with MTH. I don't really think you can rate a particular model "best." At this point, there is probably more sample variation between individual examples than type variations between different models of locomotives. Both the Legacy and MTH engines produce very large quantities of smoke on the high setting.

Well said. If you are talking about quantity of smoke, they are all capable of filling a room with smoke to the point of being obnoxious. That includes puffer units. Some may require only a slight and inexpensive modification to do this. If you are talking about a synchronized puff with every chuff sound then MTH, Legacy, and those with TAS EOB installed all do it very well.

MTH is consistant with heavy smoke . It can run you out of the room if you want it to.
I found Lionel to be luck of the draw. I have the Hiawatha with railsounds 5.0 that you can make disappear with the smoke on high. I have a legacy 10 wheeler that with it's smoke set to high couldn't come close to matching my MTH Big Boy with it's smoke on the low setting ,several other Lionel steamers are the same way.
The newest legacy steamers do really good but I can't say anything about diesels because I'm not a diesel guy.
