Isn't the whistle steam a separate smoke unit, with a separate fill location?  Did you read your owner's manual?

There’s no Lionel parts breakdown for this model as far as I can see but I’d guess it probably uses the standard dual chamber smoke unit shown below:

There’s only one smoke fluid fill point with these and that is through the main stack. It relies on the flow of smoke fluid under the divider (part number 2) between the chambers to get fluid to the whistle smoke chamber, which is not a sure thing with these units if you’ve put in a minimal amount of fluid.

Do you detect any heat/air through the whistle opening when you trigger the smoke feature? You should have both.

XXL,

As this is a weathered version of the Y6 it is possible that when the weathering was done and reassembled a tube that carries the smoke fluid to the whistle smoke unit got pinched or a wire got disconnected. If you are technically challenged like me I would call Lionel on Monday or if you have one of the Forum repair guys near you (Alex M, Marty F, or GRJ) see if you can get them to check your Y6 out. May be something simple and inexpensive.

If you are getting air through the whistle outlet but no heat and no cab light light blinks, I’d guess something is wrong with the whistle smoke switch. I think that only controls power to the heater.

Alternatively, and although I didn’t think these smoke units have thermistors like some VL smoke units, the part photo I posted above appears to show thermistors on the underside of the smoke unit board; if the whistle side one is too close to the heater it could be stopping it from heating enough. In any case I can’t see that this problem was caused during weathering.

P.S. I and others have had thermistor placement issues with the VL Big Boy's blowdown smoke feature, which like the whistle smoke on the Y6b also has a long tube connecting the smoke unit to the output(s).
