Curious as to why the Chessie system- prior 2 CSX integration had many EMD diesels outfitted with the Battery slot on the batter box?

They were the only railroad to do so and Why EMD and not GE's?
didn't the Batter Slot affect maintenance/durability of the Batteries and cable since they could have been exposed to the elements? Just curious.
