For those who have done this, how do the engines run after the upgrade?
Currently in conventional these things run pretty fast on 5 volts as indicated on the DCS handheld.
Is it just high gearing, and would that improve with the upgrade?

With speed control, the high speed stuff is no longer an issue. I've done a number of Williams diesels and steamers, they run much better with either DCS or TMCC with cruise control.
You can also wire the motors in series. That costs basically nothing and might be good enough for what you need. If not, then you can spend the bucks for an upgrade.
I have a number of Williams diesels wired in series and most of them run so well that they do not need to be converted, or at least conversion can be put off until later. A great procrastinator am I. 
I think he actually wants command capability.
