Back again. Dropped the idea of the F units, went with the Williams  Hudson upgrade instead.  Now for the questions.

1) Smoke unit. This thing puts out pitiful smoke. What should I use as a smoke unit on this Hudson

2) Tach Bracket. Has anyone done a Williams Hudson, and if so, would someone please show me what they used to mount the tach reader?

3) Tach tape. The flywheel is too large for the supplied tape. Where do I go about buying some more?

These are really the only challenges I've foreseen in the upgrade.

The plan is to finish the Hudson before Christmas. Then when he goes to run it on Christmas morning, it will be an entire new engine

Cleartrack, Gregg isn't kidding. It is done and there are many threads on the forum addressing that subject.  But first question is what is the diameter, in millimeters, of your flywheel?

As to mounting a tach reader, when I upgraded Weaver steam switcher, which had a very small flywheel, I was able to epoxy the tach reader bracket to the motor shell.  You might be able to do the same thing, with appropriate shims.

GGG, I don't know if you're talking to me (I'm not Ralph), since the Weaver I did was brass and had a 22mm flywheel.  I just used the 27mm tape and I live with the speed being off.  Making the tape shorter while keeping the same number of stripes resulted in a the loco flying---reader couldn't read it.  Another thread somewhere says this has changed since I did my conversion.

Hi GGG I did a Weaver Royal Hudson(brass) with a really small fly - wheel between the motor and drive train . I had to make a bracket for the reader .  I used the largest tape that came with the upgrade kit, (just the opposite of what I though I should use) and the engine is a great runner,  very smooth. Since I wasn't thinking of double heading this engine I didn't worry about the scale miles per hour.  It's still running.

Sorry, Thought you were Ralph.  G
