Anything is possible.   The K-Line with TMCC doesn't have the AD-20 board that is the IR interface, so you'd be looking at probably installing a new RailSounds motherboard that accommodates the three cards, including the AD-20.  That also gives you back the coupler control and backup light functionality.

The locomotive is easier, you should be able to drive a 2-wire IR transmitter off the serial data directly.

More trouble than its worth. A wired tether also allows connecting the tender and engine pickup rollers together which pretty much eliminates stalling. Lionel is adding wires to some of its wireless drawbar engines because they stall without them.

If you want to improve appearance, open up the channel in the tender to allow more side to side movement of the tether and connect it straight to the engine without the loop.
