Hello,

I have a FARR #3 Northern steam engine that has a failed sound board. I purchased a replacement board several years ago (690-8215-T15) but cannot figure out the wiring to hook it up. The diagram that came with this new board (attached) uses 3 wires, my loco had only 2 wires going to the motor, but also 2 wires going to the (chug activator) on a tender truck. It seems I am supposed to not use the wires going to the tender truck, but am unsure if this is correct.

Thanks for your help!

Hi Vic58

I think you are referring to the Great Northern 4-8-4 steam loco #6-3100.  I suggest you add the engine number in the title of your post since many of us own the engine and may be able to help.  I own this engine and love it.  The sound boards fail, mainly due to the foam that it sits on in the tender breaking down over time such that it eventually touches the metal frame and goes kaput.  Its an easy fix, but owners need to check the foam before starting up the engine.

I have also added the service document, in case you need it.   Below is the diagram from the Lionel service supplements 1-47.  There are some rudimentary wiring drawings.  Hopefully, someone will chime in with more direct help.

Hello,

After much troubleshooting, I found out the wiring diagram is correct (above) for this newer sound board I was attempting to install in my 6-3100 FARR  steam engine. The problem with the new sound board was that the whistle blows continually with the command control hooked up. When I run the engine without the command control, the sounds operate like they should. I am unsure how to proceed as I enjoy the older engines keeping their original sound systems. My Chicago and Alton steam engine (with the original sound board) works fine with the command control hooked up so it is puzzling to me why this new board will not operate correctly. It is supposed to be a similiar replacement item. I have limited electrical skills so any additional advice is appreciated.

Vic
