Welcome back to STEAMday Sunday. This is where we discuss, and post photos and videos of, steam locomotives of all kinds. When we do, we post only photos and videos we have taken, or those in which we have the permission of the owner to post, and fully comply with the Forum Terms of Service.

Boston and Albany (B&A) is one of my favorite railroads and my contributions today are 2 B&A steamers.

First, a Lionel B&A Hudson:

Next, is a K Line B&A tank engine:

Now, let’s see the steamers you would like to share today. Arnold

Hello, StDaySun fans!  Arnold, being a B&A fan, like you, I was wondering if any B&A steam locomotives were preserved.  I don’t think so, but I bet our resident historian, MELGAR, knows the answer.

My steamer today is from an affiliated road, the New York Central.  Consolidation no. 1149 is an early version of this Lionel model, equipped with a “puffer” smoke unit and only one chuff per revolution.  It went back to the factory after purchase because it wasn’t chuffing, but Lionel repaired it promptly and it has run well for 15-16 years. This model, with updated features, is still available today in a variety of road names.

I recently posted my Weaver diecast model (1809LP) of Boston & Maine Class K-7-a 2-8-0 Consolidation #2403 on Steamday Sunday pulling two passenger coaches on my 12’-by-8’ layout. But, since B&M #2403 also ran in freight service, I’m posting it at the head end of a short freight train on my 10’-by-5’ layout this week.

Boston & Maine #2403 was built by Alco in 1907 and ran in passenger service around Boston until at least September 1954. It was the last 2-8-0 to be retired by the B&M and was scrapped in June 1955.

MELGAR

Edit: As far as I know, no Boston & Albany or New York Central steam locomotives have been preserved.

Good video Bob.

I hope we, at least, get different road numbers on the Rutland RS-1s.

Good morning fellow steam fans!  Thanks Arnold for keeping the boiler up to pressure, notching out the throttle and getting us rolling for this final Sunday of March!

Here is a fresh video and photo that I took late last night.  It's steam all the way on the FSJ!

This video shows a Williams brass Lackawanna camelback and a Williams die cast B&O Hudson .. both are scale.   The third engine, running the Mountain Division, is a scale Weaver brass B&O 0-6-0.

Engineer Scooty Myers eases his Camelback across the newly installed grade crossing.

Yes I did Patrick. I have a Samsung Galaxy S25. Sometimes I mount it to a tripod if I need my hands free but this was hand held. I can sit in my office chair and rest my elbows on the arm rests. When I raised it up I had two hands on the phone. Being seated gives a solid base so the camera doesn't shake.
The scrap loads are made from stainless-steel scouring  pads. The start of the project can be seen here. It's goes on for a couple pages.

Joy Line Trains , produced from 1927 to 1936 by Girard Model Works were mechanical toys made primarily from a plant in Girard, Pa.  This train set first appeared in the 1933 Sears catalogue with a passenger consist and a circle of track for $3.79 if you also wished freight cars, you could get an additional 2 cars (box and tank) + caboose for $4.44 (this price covered both the passenger and the freight cars and one locomotive / tender) .  The passenger cars and the observation shown below with a green body and orange roof date from 1932-1934.  The locomotive is the "Type 105" with a red boiler and cab which dates from 1932-1935.

At this time Louis Marx previously a salesman for  Joy Line, had become a majority stockholder but Girard Model works went in bankruptcy on March 24, 1934 following significant legal disputes and actions.   Subsequently on Jan 1 1935 the assets of Girard Model works were purchased from the receivers by a group that included Louis and David Marx (David was Louis' brother) as Directors.  It was the re- organized as the Girard Manufacturing Company and from that point on was a component of Louis Marx & Co and the era of Joy Line Trains came to an end.

So I give you the MIGHTY Girard Model Works, Joy line 0-4-0 steamer, resplendent in her red boiler, with a passenger consist of 2 coaches and observation all from 1932 -1934.
