Has anybody setup a Lionel multi-unit consist to such as f-units to run on one engine address instead of addressing each unit individually and building a "train" on the Legacy remote? Ive got a set of Legacy F3s that I want to run with the engine address instead of with the "train" function

yes I and a few other club members do it all the time.
just give each engine the same number.
make sure you address each engine one at a time and do not have an already addressed engine on a live track.
Do you run any in reverse requiring a swap of the motor wires?
I'm not sure what the advantage is. Digress to creating a TMCC lash-ups before Legacy.
(1.) Each coupler in the consist is still functional, while as a consist, only the front and rear couplers are functional.
(2.) Also only the Front light on the lead unit is Functional in forward.
(3.) Reverse direction, headlight on the rear unit is functional.
(4.) TMCC programming allowed for the two different directions that a unit could run placed in the consist with out changing motor wiring.
(5.) Assign each unit to TR 0 when done and they all revert to single operation.

Just don't fire the couplers or they all will open, and yes you need to reverse the wiring on the rear facing engine. G
Im not worried about couplers I dont like addressing trains since my primary use fo my legacy system is addressing from cab number
Maybe I don't understand what you mean, but as Mike says, if all the engines have the same address and even if you create an MU at that point I think if Engine 1 is told to fire a coupler or blow a whistle, all engine #1s will do that. Even ones not in a MU. G
The whole point is to not have to create multi unit lash ups for locos that always run together. I find the task kind of annoying because I always have like 20+ locos on the layout and I find them in the legacy remote by the cab number by pressing select and entering the cab number. That is how I always find my locos while running and this is option is omitted in multi unit consists. Funits for instance always run as sets. If I have 3 powered F3's instead of running them as a consist why not set them up to run as one loco. just makes life a little simpler
Matt I would unplug the rear couplers in the A units and all couplers in the B units. Also unplug the rear lights in the A units. As for the motor in the back A unit, try it first (uncoupled from the the other units) to see if it's good to go or needs the wires swapped. You'll have to swap the wires for the front light in the last A too.
Not fa nuttin but making a Train is a lot easier IMHO. It will always be there.

do you run at a club? do you use the same engines multi units train?
I primarily run at the club (no room to have a large layout) and I use the same engines in my multi unit train and each week the train is still in the legacy system waiting for me to load it into my cab2.
if you only run a home with the same multi trains once programed you never have to do it again. the numbers I use at the club for my TR is 95 through 99.
what ever works for you this is just a suggestion.

I had a set of Lionel Scale F7 WP ABA. Each unit came with it's own Legacy Module. The cab numbers were 918A, 918B, and 918D.
I addressed the individual units as 18, 19 and 20. I numbered the MU as 18. The Train numbers can duplicate the Engine numbers without issue. This way you can use the cab number as your train number. I hope I am not stating the obvious Matt.

Matt, Ok, I think I am correct than. You can do your method, but if the engine address are all #1 or what ever, all will respond. Great for speed and direction, smoke, but firing a coupler might cause headaches. So if you don't use the couplers you are good to go. G
