I'm hoping for some expert input from GGG, GRJ, Barry, and Marty on this.

I've got a N&W Y6B 20-3009-1 that I have started upgrading from PS1 to PS3 with the new 50-1911 PS32 kit.

This engine was purchased new, by me, I believe directly from MTH back in 1994/5.  I think I may have even driven to Columbia, MD to pick it up.  It has been in my possession ever since.  It has been under glass for 20 years.  It might have run once or twice, maybe for 30 seconds - 1 minute.

I changed the old white battery out with a new green one.  Powered up with ZW on test track.  Forward, Reverse, lights, no smoke - assumed either powered off or no smoke fluid for 20 years.  Since I was tearing apart, figured I'd see the smoke unit when I got it opened.

Did the tender upgrade.  No issues.  All wires dressed.  

Then I cracked open the engine for the first time ever, to start work on the engine.  I stopped, as I did my A and J over the past month, and this one was very different.  Photos attached.

1) What I assume is the CV board is not mounted in top of the boiler shell.  It's mounted above the drive shaft.  Wasn't expecting that.

2) Leaked residue, what I assume is from the Capacitor?  Below the CV board and onto the frame of the engine.

3) Darkened areas on the PWB near the location of the wires going to the smoke unit, but only the pwb connectors, not the wire connectors.  But the board is dis-colored, too.  Maybe I ran it longer than a couple minutes 12 years ago....but I don't think so....

4) No fan-driven smoke unit - I assume this is a Seuthe.

Has anyone seen this before?  Should I be concerned?  Lights lit before I upgraded.  Smoke unit didn't work, but it's a Seuthe. 

I assume I need to get a MTH PS2 smoke unit to replace the Seuthe - any part number recommended?  Any idea how to get it in there?  Anyone have pictures of what they did?

Any suggestion on the CV board?  Clean-up the leaked residue and use as-is?

How about the headlight?  Do most folks just leave it alone and run it off the CV board, vs. run it off the new DCS control?  On my A, I replaced it and ran it off DCS.  But this looks like a lot of trouble to do that.

Anything else I should be concerned about before going any further?

So, I believe the discoloration on the PWB is not a "burn", but rather liquid from the capacitor that leaked out and discolored the board/connector.  When moving 12 years ago, the engine was in storage for probably 8 months, so it wasn't flat.

I decided I am going to have the headlight DCS controlled, but do I need to swap out the light and the wiring?  I'd rather leave the old bulb and wiring in and just connect the new PS32 wiring to the old bulb wiring.

Still looking for the best MTH PS2 or PS3 smoke unit part number.

George - Thanks!  I've got the AA-0000029 PS2 smoke unit on order.  Finished the PS3 upgrade, dressed the wires.  Everything works (except the smoke.)

I found a 4MB Y3 PS3 sound file that I thought was better than the 1MB Y6b PS2 version, and installed that.

When you said "Make a bigger stack," above, what exactly did that mean?  I was assuming I would need to open up the diameter of the existing stack on the boiler casting, but like you, I didn't want to mess with anything on the casting.  But looking at your photo, looks like you didn't do anything to the boiler stack.   Without the AA-0000029 in hand, I now think your comment means I need to adapt the OD of the PS2 smoke unit stack to match the ID of the boiler stack.  Are there "custom" stack adapters available, or did you turn your own?

The brass cup on the MTH smoke unit is a small diameter and will not fill the engine stack.  I took brass tube from hobby shop or do it your self center that had an outside diameter to fit the engine stack.  May have been 3/8"  you can measure the unit you took out.  The inside dia almost fits over the smoke unit brass cup.  What I did was use a pipe fitting tool to widen the end of the tube, to get it started over the cup, then press on with vise.

It can't be too long other wise you can't fit the smoke unit in.  So this takes some measurements.  Basically works to help hold smoke unit in the stack and makes sure adding smoke fluid goes into the smoke unit.   G

George - thanks.  OD of the Seuthe is right around 3/8" (not calipered - visual on a tape measure).  Off to the store to get some brass tube and a pipe fitting tool, but can't go much further until I have the smoke unit.

For anyone else following along, here are some steps I did so far.

#1 - took off the cab. Probably could have gotten around this step, but it made it easier to do step 2.

#2 - took a long dowel and tapped the front of the boiler off from the inside.  It was definite tight fit and needed the dowel and some taps on the hammer around the edge to press it out (there is a screw to remove, too, on the bottom).

Inside of boiler:

Fabricated a small foam stock piece to test fit.  Need to convert this to aluminum.  But exact size, placement and screw holes will need to wait until my new PS2.0 smoke unit comes next week.
